NewBe here. Kind of belong, have a Gibson D tractor.
Just acquired a Flint and Walling windmill and would like to talk to someone who's a lot more in tune than I with them at the moment.
Any direction you can give me?
Thank you.

I've rebuilt the crank [machined the rods and flywheel to hold ball bearings] of an "ironman" waterpump windmill, and had some experience with small power generating ones too.

What do you need to know?

I have not been on this board for some time so I do not know what is happening now but there are a lot of knowledgable people on this board,

VintageWindmillParts.com Index page

I know some about aermotor mills, and have rebuilt a number of them, but I have a few F&W parts (I think) a head and some blades, but besides saving them I have not done much with them, was going to put on short wood towers and display them but that is yet to come,

I have a F&W Star 26, 2 F&W Star 37s, a Star 24, and 3 Baker Heller-Allers, All up and running in the wind.

What would you like to know ? P1140761 (531x800).jpg20150827_162743.jpg

I rebuilt a Star 24 a few years back. New roller bearings, drilled and tapped the shaft for a huge washer so the wheel won't fall off...a common problem after a rebuild.

That's remarkable. Same thing happened to one of my 37's and the 26. If you drill the drive shaft to pin the wheel hub, the shaft will break from fatigue. I drilled it axially and drove in a cap bolt.

Well, I am one of those that drilled through the drive shaft, and indeed the shaft did break. Thinking of having a new shaft made. Most of the dimensions are obvious, but the front part of the shaft that is inside the wheel is badly worn.

Question what is the original diameter of the driveshaft inside the wheel? Is it the same as the rest (about 1 1/8")

Thanks
