Tractor
9N, Yanmar 2310
OK, so at the risk of sounding stupid, here goes. I have a Yanmar 2310. Great little tractor. Earlier this summer I bought a used KK 60" tiller. Banged up a little, but the price was right. Anyway, the other day I was finishing up turning some ground over for my fall deer plot, when BOOM. This is ground I had been over before. I thought I must have hit a big rock or stump or something of that nature. So I raised tiller, shut everything down and went to see what happened. Truth is, I still don't know. What I DO know is, everything is locked up tight. Tiller, PTO, both tight as can be. After not seeing anything, and not being able to move anything, I thought I would unhook tiller so I could at least have access to tractor. Nice thought, but I could NOT get tiller knuckle off of PTO shaft. It seems really bound up. So, I am stuck. Tractor (and tiller) still in field. Theories? Comments? Ideas? Thanks in advance, I do know from past experiences this is a good group in here. I should mention I have used the tiller several hours over the summer. It DOES have a slow leak but I keep an eye on it.

Try disconnecting top link and lower 3pt hitch arms separate the shaft so all you to do is to is remove the shaft from the pto the see what you got. .............Welcome to TBN.

I like this. But if its bound up so bad you can't get the PTO shifter to neutral and the locked tiller is therefor locking the rear wheels - maybe after everything is disconnected try driving in reverse to unload the tension in the driveline. Worst case take a vehicle down there and drag the tiller backward until the driveline slides apart.

I think your chain may snapped in tiller and locked it all up in the tiller gearbox. Like others said get the tiller off by diconneting it and dragging it backward if u have too. Does the tractor dive? Can you get pto in neutral? Once tiller is off you can have a look. Possible there was a catistrauphic failure in your pto gears but that would not be my first guess.

My first (hopeful) thought is the tiller gearbox has 'let go'. You mentioned an oil leak...

Anyway, Can you release the side-drive on the tiller and rotate anything?

Good plan to remove the tiller from the tractor BUT the very next thing you NEED to do is remove the half PTO shaft from the tractor.

You do not want to start the tractor and accidentally (or unavoidably) engage the PTO with a length of pipe on the rear flailing around like a demented banshee!

Thinking the same as the others. Maybe take the side cover off the tiller and look in there and see if the chain or gear has bound everything up. Sometimes can use a 2x4 in put it in the tines and rock them a bit to see if you can get a wee bit of movement so you can move release the PTO shaft.

What connection does your shaft have at the tractor pto? Is it a push button, twist to release, roll pin, or just what? Just wondering why you can't remove it. I know it is stuck but it would be good to figure out how to get it unstuck.

Manual transmission ? Roll the crankshaft back to unload the PTO. Shouldn't the clutch help you, too ? Need 2 people to get this done.

Best idea yet!

Part of the problem is: on these the PTO is a direct mechanical connection to the rear tires while the PTO lever is in gear. So as you suggested the tractor has to roll backward a little to unload the PTO tension. Your idea or the 2x4 in the tines, while someone tugs on the PTO shift lever, are likely the most practical next step.
