That is the same mower I have. I use it for roadside mowing and rough field mowing. The only time I have broken mine is when I hit a rock or got into gravel with it. Lengthening my top link to roll it back a little helped alot. It kept the teeth and blades out of the dirt.
You may not have that problem on a good hay field though.

I have the 394 as well. I am having an issue with continually breaking the first guard (the one closest to the power head). Any thoughts on why only this one? It sounds like a turkey in a lard bucket constantly pecking. It will run smoothly at any RPM when not in hay, but as soon as I start into the grass it starts the pecking noise and then gets louder until it breaks the guard.

Your gaurd bar is probably broke under the blade head. Mine was doing that and when I took the section bar out and the hold downs loose I found it. My advise would be take the gaurd and section bar off and go through them fixing loose gaurds and blades. With a few wrenches, hammer and some rivets you will have it back in A1 shape. If the gaurd bar is broke you can weld it to the blade head but when you do finally order a new guard bar you will have to also order a head about $25 extra. Hope that helps. FYI, the reason it probably broke is when you get a pile of cut grass on the blade a try to flip the blade up and it bounces or lift the bar up under something putting pressure on it( basically anytime the staff is flexed.)

I know it's been a while since you posted this question, so I was just wondering if you got it worked out or not? I bought a used one this summer, and was using it just the other day and it broke just about where you described. Unfortunately the guard bar foot broke also. I ordered a new one, and I will try to have the old one welded at local machine shop. I bought a whole new guard bar with guards and foot. I could have bought just the guard bar and foot for a whole lot less, but figured I could use the old guards as replacements if the old one can't be fixed.

Thanks,

Tim Robinson

Well he were are again 😺. I am having the exact same problem with the guard bar breaking at the foot. I bought a used one and it broke immediately. We took it apart only to find that it had been welded several times. We welded it back together and cut about an acre and it broke again. We replaced the entire bar, with the foot and guards. It broke again after an acre of mowing hay. I am new to hay cutting but have been mowing cautiously. I’m at a loss. Seems like a common problem with these.
