Apparently other people thought differently, I thought it looked pretty clear to me they were added after loading.Duh. It's obvious. The straps were added after the gravel was loaded. Could not have happened any other way.
Why, we don't know, but the idea that the straps were put there to hold the sides up is beyond silly.
As for adding straps to a drop side trailer with a lose load, it's not uncommon as a safety method, as you'll notice the straps are centered on each side.
If this had been a flatbed or a fixed side trailer I would says it's pretty silly, but in this case I would say it can serve a purpose.
Might be a company policy drawn from having the sides come undone during transport and subsuquent cleanup expense, we'll probably never know.
