Hi all, Don here.

Got 13 acres in a town just outside of the Detroit area, with 10-acre+ lots all around me. We just got our house built on it in March, and are now starting to enjoy the self-sufficient homesteading experience (subdivisions with HOAs suck!!).

We're fortunate in that our house was built on a lot that previously had an apple orchard, and we have approx 20 apple trees. They're very overgrown now so begins the long process of reining them back down to a usable size.

The lot is mostly unfinished. We had 3 acres cleared so we could build on it, and I'm in the process of cutting the undergrowth from another couple acres around the orchard (lots of wild grass, grapevine, and Asian Bittersweet vine). It's also been a bit of a chore uprooting all that vine so the apple trees recover a bit. I've basically been ramming all the vine with my front end loader and uprooting it. =)

We have about 6-7 acres of wooded land. I'll eventually make a walking/riding path through the woods to hunt from and so my wife and son can enjoy it.

Additionally, we have a 600 foot driveway or so out to the main road.

Ended up getting an LS XR3135 with a front end loader, pallet forks, rotary cutter, box scraper, landscaping rake, rear blade, and subsoiler.

So far the tractor has done everything I've asked of it, including some massive tree moving. We're heating with an outdoor woodburning boiler that goes to a basement in-slab radiant floor. So far, I estimate 5 full cords of wood needed a year for heat, and am trying to get 1-3 years surplus. Firewood gathering and handling is going to be one of the bigger functions for this tractor once the initial grounds are tamed.

Anyways, I'm enjoying the site immensely, and most assuredly because this isn't just a tractor-gear site, but lots of sharing in the know-how behind their use.

Welcome to TBN & the forum. Fine looking tractor. The background of your tractor pic does resemble a jungle somewhat. I can see that you have your work cut out for yourself.

That is actually all the trees they knocked down to clear the 3 acres so we could figure out exactly where we wanted the house.

they wanted over $5k to haul all the trees away, but I figured with 13 acres I had the room to just stack them, so they did.

I'll eventually be pulling that massive pile apart with the pallet forks (or getting grapples), and turning the larger sections into firewood. The brush and vine will all get added to a burn pile. Everything in there is a year old now, but still in unsplit form, so I figure if I cut it up now and split it, it should be good and seasoned for next year.

And thanks all for the welcome!

Welcome Don! SE MI represent! Nice tractor - did you buy from Aeschilmans on 6-mile?

I notice you said "town" but then list Ann Arbor... so I'm guessing your mailing address is actually one of the nearby towns? I just built in Superior township in 2015 myself after lucking out on a foreclosed 19 acre lot near Ypsi back in 2012/2013. It's a great area to settle down in for long term economic, environmental/weather, and transportation security, I think.

Any pics of your home build?

A year would be the *soonest* you'd want to use it, after it's split, stacked and top-covered. Well, assuming it's hardwood, anyway.

I did buy it from Aeschilman's!

I live just north of Brighton, actually.

Here is my house. The apple trees are the smaller ones on the right of the photo. There are some ultra-large pine trees right behind them as well. My property goes all the way back to them. The area to the left, just off the photo, is entirely wooded.

Here is my wood burner. I've since got all that wood cut and split.

Here's what I currently have waiting for me. Not shown is a 10' log about 2.5' thick, and about 4 logs that are about 1.5' thick and 40' long.
