From what I understand if you shake it more than 3 times, that is considered playing with it. So no can or saw shaking for me please.

I think MANY of our traditions are based on a similar premise. We have no idea why we do them, other than "that was the way I was taught to do it". It amazed me how many old men on this forum "fessed up" that they had no idea a grease gun coupler unscrewed to loosen the jaws.

:laughing: Oh, I could wax lyrical for hours describing Naval terminologies... why the right side is Starboard, the left side is Port, etc...

Why they call it the Bridge is an interesting one, but I don't want to thread-jack. :shipcaptain:

Oh, OK, I'll keep it brief...

Sailing ships would be 'controlled' from the stern (quarterdeck) where the Captain/Sailing Master could see how the sails were set according to wind direction and steering accordingly.

When steam power was introduced they employed Port & STBD side paddle-wheels, amidships... because technology hadn't figured out how to pierce the hull for a propeller (screw) shaft. Now, the new trade of engineer/stoker needed to perform maintenance on these paddle-wheels; climbing up/climbing down/walk across the deck/climbing up/climbing down. So they built a bridge between the paddle-wheels.

The Captain/Sailing Master could better control his powered vessel from this elevated position, so they transferred the 'command' position to the bridge between the paddle-wheels. Eventually, technology solved the 'piercing of the hull' problem (screw propulsion is superior to paddle-wheels) so they removed the two side paddle-wheels...

But they kept the Bridge. It's been called that ever since. :)

If you shake it too much, you are playing with it. :D. I swirl my gas can a few times but not the saw.
