My father, a WWII veteran from a combat engineering battalion in the south pacific started buying volkswagens in the 60's. We had 4 vans, a beetle and a karmen ghia. In the 80's he had a Toyota land cruiser and a tercel. We always had two cars. One Chevy and one foreign car.

Americans bought Japanese and German cars after WWII... it just took a while. The same thing will happen with Chinese cars.

Yep. They are already doing better, and more importantly, there are a significant number of Chinese movers and shakers who recognize that they need to do better.

I think they have a longer road ahead of them than the Japanese did after WWII, for various cultural reasons and because of the sheer number of manufacturers (hard to police, and a large mass needing to be penetrated with new ways of doing business), but I think they will be competitive in quality eventually. They may not equal the Japanese, but they will be good enough.

And its a mistake, Americans will reject buying cars made in China, I wouldn't buy a car made in Mexico. I read the place of manufacturing and so must millions of others.
