General purpase chain size

Lowes Home Improvement sells a grade 70 5/16" chain 20 ft long with grab hooks each end for $36.98 today. I bought 4 of these back in 2005 to tie down my 110tlb for transporting. At that time these were $29.99 each. No problems in 12 years of use.

Good for small utility tractors and large CUTS.

I had "decided" I was going to standardize on 5/16", but then I picked up a 10' piece of 1/4" G70 (3150lb WLL).

The 1/4" seems like a nice size, but it's actually more expensive than the (more common?) 5/16".

Got my supply of 5/16 chain hanging off the front bucket on the Kubota. Great for rigging all sort of stuff. Got a five gallon bucket of 3 /8 chain I used when younger. Now the pail rides in the bucket because it is heavy to carry.

if you work with a chain frequently the 1/4" is easier to handle. Plenty for the bx use too. You may find a short chain 2' to 5' with a slip hook x grab hook will be handy to have too. I use these short chains to pick up implements and other objects with the fel and backhoe. The slip hook will fit over the bucket lips where the grab hooks will not.

1/4 chain is so small I worry about it being physically damaged. Not necessarily exceeding the wll but nicks or damage to the links. There just isn’t much metal there. For some things it may be fine. I use 1/4 chain to tie down my UTVs but wouldn’t feel comfortable with it for general purposes as hard as I am on things

I use mostly 5/16 grade 70 chain with grade 80 hooks but I have a few 3/8 chains. My long chains all have grab hooks on them. I have short chains with just a slip hook or whatever on one end and I use those at the end of the long chain with grab hooks. I like the twist lock hook as well.

I mostly run 5/16th" G70, with a 3/8th" here and there. My "I wasn't asking" size is a 7/8th" cable. Scraped out for the application it was in(crane), but way overkill for my needs.

I do have one of those bunch grubber things coming to deal with some briars I can't dig up with the ratchet rake due to them being underneath bushes I want to keep.

Sounds familiar! Only my five gallon pail full of 3/8" chain sits far back in a corner of my pole building.
