Disney - YES ! ! That switch was the answer. As far as I can tell, the backhoe had never been removed from the machine. I found the switch, fussed with it a bit and the rock shaft works (after removing the backhoe). Fantastic - as I now have a backhoe that will also take my three point equipment. This has been one of the primary reasons for this particular machine.

Glad to hear it was something simple (did not require tearing apart the machine) and inexpensive (only your time, and maybe some spray lube)!

chris,
I should bring up this fwiw, the current 4x20 series use the same lift arms as the 110 so you can get the arms with the telescopic lower links from Deere whole goods. When I purchased my 110 I had the standard links and it was difficult to hook up my boxblade with clevis hitch. When I ordered my 4520 I added two sets of the telescopic links for about $300/set. Much more user friendly.

You almost certainly have the new Deere paint and I would buy it from the dealer. The price is not much more and the quality of their factory paint is vastly superior to the lesser quality paint sold at the farm stores. the Deere paint dries quick, covers great is hard and glossy and sprays beautifully. I use a fair amount of it. Thin with acetone.

I have had good performance from the Deere brand of paint too.

Hello gentlemen and women -

I have removed the backhoe to check on the 3 point hitch. The rockshaft does not do anything. No lift, no wiggle, no pressure, nothing. It feels like there isn't any oil in the lift cylinder. I can lift it by hand and it simply drops with no resistance at all.
Chris

I have a similar problem with my 110. There is no movement or sound of the rock shaft when the control lever is moved. It is as if there is no fluid in the cylinder and I can easily move the rock shaft at will. However, my presence switch is working. I was about to remove the rock shaft assembly to see what the problem is but the outcome of this thread has me wondering.

I am asking here if someone can confirm that it is normal that the rock shaft can be moved by hand with the engine off? My machine is a 2004 MY, has only 460 hours and the backhoe has never been removed. I would hate to open this up if it isn't necessary. Thank you all for any help.

... my presence switch is working...

May I ask how you are sure the presence switch is working?
Yes it is normal to be able to lift up on the arms, even with the engine off (or even it is is on), now if you can do that with a box blade attached, then I am impressed.

This is hopeful news.

I removed the switch and checked for continuity with a 12V test light. Perhaps I should have consulted the technical manual I just purchased from the dealer?

After reading your response again I realized you may have misunderstood the condition.

Not only can I "lift up" on the arms but I can also easily move them down. I simply don't see how this could be normal, it will not support any implement with this condition. Again, could you or someone else please confirm that the arms can indeed be moved up and down by hand with the engine running or not?

I have been looking through the technical manual. I am finding it difficult to locate what I am looking for. I saw mention of a "backhoe switch" but not a backhoe "presence switch", I'm not sure they are the same.

Thanks again for any help.

Lol, that was a good one.

Yes I can move my lift arms up or down even with the engine off
