We had planned to get another Corgi next Feb. But one just popped up for adoption. I had planned to do the "heavy" research for a dog health insurance in December and January but that needs to be moved up.

So any recommendations? My main concern is for covering major non-routine medical bills. The $$$$ we spent on our last 2 dogs would have bought a new 50HP tractor with bells and whistles and only prolonged the dogs lives for a few months.

thanks in advance

Few years ago I bought dog insurance. When there was a problem they refused to pay because they said it was a "pre-existing condition". No more dog insurance for me! Nevertheless this looks like a good link if you really want it: Pet Insurance Comparison 2017: Who's Best?

Would you please share with us the company that refused to pay?

And it fell through with the shelter dog, I was too late.

I think you are making a smart choice. When our corgi was about 7, the vet suggested that we get insurance. I priced it for a dog that age and it was pretty pricey. Fast forward to this summer when he was 10 1/2 and developed disc trouble. It came down to only two real options, one where he went to doggie heaven and one where he didn't. I gladly paid the $8K or so, so we could all be together for another four or so years (I hope), but I would have been financially ahead if I had gotten insurance a few years ago.

I was curious about this thread. I've never had the impression these insurance companies were worth the cost. I'm not surprised to hear someone got denied. Has anyone had a positive experience with one? As for Rock knocker, you'd only have been ahead if they agreed to pay.

I'm probably just a pessimist, but I have to believe that prices for veterinary procedures are going to go through the roof as more people get health insurance for their pets. We shop around for prices, and have driven over an hour to find cheaper prices for certain services.

Our local vet wanted to charge $800 dollars for some dental work on our Shih-Tzu (that was minimum price with more for extra extractions). We searched and found a reputable vet about an hour away that charged less than half that amount. They did a wonderful job and the after surgery care was fantastic.

I don't know about dog insurance.......personally.....I would not buy it. We love our dogs but.....based on reality and finances........sometimes you just need to put them down. We had an Aussie Shep. a few years back.....he was a great dog.....developed bone cancer at 8 years old......the vet said we could go the chemo route and possibly extend his life........probably would have cost several thousand dollars........no way to live for the dog.....we put him down.....tough decision but the right thing to do. I agree......dog insurance will eventually make vet bills skyrocket like people bills. Sad!

I really think that as more people have insurance vets feel free to charge more.
My Dad put my first dog down after she got very infirm and had some flesh wounds. Out for a short walk and a bullet.
The last dog, our beloved Corgi, (technically my son's) suffered from some dietary problem when she was about 2 yrs old. After about $4K of vet bills she got on a diet that worked and she recovered to be a joyful vibrant dog UNTIL she got encephalitis a little over a year later. X-rays showed how the inflammation was growing, drugs would decrease it for a while but it was getting so she had about 10 pills a day all forced down her throat. I'm sure she was hating it and suffering more than we could tell. But as long as she was not getting worse my son and wife were almost frantic to keep her alive.

After 3 major cycles of going to emergency, she staying in the vet hospital for a week, getting x-rays and meds, coming home for a few weeks then repeat, the bills were just getting to great. The last day when I carried her out so she could go to the bathroom she just laid down and looked at me, seemingly pleading to be relieved of the pain. It tore a large hole in me to decide to put her down.
