I cannot get the YM276D into second gear. First, third, and fourth work great, but second simply doesn't work. It's as though there is no keyway for the stick to slide forward. Any ideas?

Assume you are talking range shift? Do you have a parts or service manual? If not, pm me with your email and I might be able to help you.

The YM276 only has three gears. The gear straight ahead of first is the creeper gear. To get into creeper you need to lift the lockout 'button' on the cover just to the left of the shift lever boot. You can see it in your pics of your power steering.

Thank you for that information. I am learning from the seasoned members here and was incorrect in thinking the YM276D was not going into second gear. Looking at the decal (not the best) in the picture, it looks like there is a standard H pattern shift. The gear I could not get into was on the bottom right, or the number "1" on the decal. As Gary indicated that is the creeper gear, not second. So, the gears on the H pattern go, bottom right is first or creeper; top right is second gear, bottom left is third gear, and top left is fourth gear. I was thinking the tractor was going super fast in third gear, but it was really in fourth gear.

I now know what errantly seemed to be first was second and what seemed to be third was fourth. After figuring out the proper shift pattern, perceptions changed. Here is the very bad picture that helped me figure out the proper shift pattern. Thanks everyone.

Gary, thanks for telling how to shift into creeper. Second is very slow though, so creeper must be unbelievably slow.

Creeper gear is used when you want to watch the seasons change while putting the tractor in the shed. :D

I find the lowest gear useful when trying to get forks under a pallet while approaching on rough uneven ground. (Photo). Standing up to see and working the loader control continually. But only for the last few feet.

Rototilling in the lowest gear is too slow and chops the earth too fine, which makes airless clay.

I wonder if the additional torque available using creeper gear was the cause for stripped teeth on this tractor. Are they 'downstream' from the compound gearing?
