Children Under 8 Spending Almost an Hour a Day on Smartphones

As Christmas shopping season approaches, many young kids will wish for smartphones, and new research shows small children are spending more and more time glued to the screen.

Children 0 to 8 years old now spend close to an hour, 48 minutes per day on a mobile device, according to an October study by Common Sense Media.

The kids' screen time is up from only 15 minutes a day in 2013.

Smartphones have been linked to depression and attention-deficit disorder in children and teenagers.

"They should just play," said child and adolescent family therapist Darby Fox, who said kids do not learn how to entertain themselves if they are connected to a device all the time.

The number of teens who experienced at least one major depressive incident shot by 60 percent between 2010 and 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services found.

Psychotherapist Tom Kersting said parents should provide kids with internet-connected smartphones when they are comfortable with their children having access to pornographic material.

I was on a plane recently, and in front of me was a girl of about 8 or 9, playing foul games on a smartphone and watching vile movies. "Adults" with her didn't seem to think it was a problem.

And then they wonder why they turn on them when they hit the teen years.

Steppenwolfe - you are wise beyond your years.

I often wonder, as I see todays youngsters being guided around by the glow from their smartphones.......how in the world did I ever survive my youth without a cell phone - must have been a God-given miracle. Perhaps I found other means of entertainment since the cell phone, in my youth, wasn't even a glimmer on the horizon.

Stranger still - my son, who is now 47 - survived his teen years without a cell phone also.

The smart phone has replaced parenting - of any kind. The "keep them quiet, keep them occupied with a cell phone" theory has already began to backfire.

Seldom heard any more is the excuse - " the cell phone has been given to my child to keep them safe". Yes - and if its not the right type/color then your child has just fallen below the level of the Jones's child and his smart phone - what a dam shame.

It's been known for a long time that children don't develop socially as they should if they don't spend considerable time with other children...that's why I think that K and pre K socialization is valuable. I also recently heard a report that when children start out early and spend a lot of time on these phones they do not develop their communication skills; and as a result they have great difficulty in school. I am also hearing that some recent high school grads are having difficulties with communications in their interviews and their interactions with their co workers, and it's being attributed to that very thing.

I know our grand kids do spend considerable amount of time on these things, but there are rules, and they are not allowed except at certain times, and especially not at meals or other social gatherings. Good weather? Get your butts outside!

Of course if they don't have one they will be social outcasts, don't blame the parents, point the blame at Gates and Jobs lust for wealth.
They are truly between a rock and a hard place.
Having said that my pet hate is going to a restaurant and watching over 50% of the patrons with their heads in their laps or worse still following a driver who is wandering all over the road moreso that a drunk, worse again when they are behind you.
I see that someone developed an app so the users could see the footpath ahead of them while walking and texting and in Melbourne we even have a pedestrian crossing with control lights mounted into the footpath, such was the incidence of texters being oblivious to traffic and walking out in front of cars.

Yes, it's never the fault of the parents/hood rats/gangbangers/flake of the day. It's always the fault of some evil, greedy business man.

I think so, every time a new iPhone comes out it is a must have and the companies are well aware of this, I still use a Galaxy S5 and find it does everything I need it to such as access my computer files when I am in court, submit reports in a hurry that I don't have with me.
Ever noticed that those who don't really need the latest technology are the ones who lust for it just so they can keep up with the peer group? and as long as this continues the supply and demand will continue.
The last thing I saw was a company doing wedding videos with iPhones, and it went wild, what a rort, if I want video I use my 4K video camera but I can't talk or text on it.
Remember when pagers were a status symbol?

I don't know guys. I see a lot of parents have their face smashed in the screen. Always thought most gave the kids one so they wouldn't be bothered.
