Anyways, has anyone made up some of their own panels for under the rail? I made a landing which is basically 11 feet long with a 5 step staircase on both ends- so ~ 20 or so feet long with a continuous rail. Tiled and turned out just fine. I essentially have to make up 3) 43" wide panels and 4) 31" panels which is 2 for each stair case. With weather on my butt, it is finished and installed sans these panels, and what the heck- let it meet code. As it was finished with square floor tiles , I was just going to do a 3 or 4 inch grid or possibly the stainless cable route. It doesn't seem to pass muster w/ the misses. I think I've seen every Google image for inspiration, but I'm missing something here. It would be a great time to have a Plasmacam, but I don't. A cutter , yes. One of the better metal stores by me I know has leafs and such, but do I take rod , bend it, beat it and tack leaves on the end of tig rod? Or cut something out of some sheet? Looking for something at least repeatable, somewhat easy here and currently fishing for the magical solution....

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking for ideas on how to build a metal railing for a deck of some kind? And you are looking for a source for original ideas on how to make it unique?

King Architectural Metals is where I go to see what's available. Their prices are fair and their service is very fast.

Google Images, Houzz and Pinterest are also good sources for ideas.

Here is a railing that I built for my gazebo. I bought the circles and the top of the railing from King Architectural metals. I designed it to strengthen the posts. In my opinion, the diagonal angles lock the railing together, making it structural.

Really neat railing Eddie. How are the railings mounted to the un-even surfaces of the posts? What is the finish on the railings?

Thanks,
Joe

Thanks for the link Eddie. You are obviously a very skilled artist. A great gathering place you have there, but almost better to enjoy a cuppa joe with only your thoughts and a glimmer in your eye. Cheers:coffee:

Eddie,

I've always liked your pagoda/gazeebo... or whatever you call it. Its exactly what I'd like to build for my Mom.

Can you post more pics and give any construction recommendations?

Won't be building the fandy roof, but everything else looks great.

IIRC, he has a whole thread on building it.
Look at the threads that he has started.

The quickest and easiest way would be to make straight picket panels, they can be dressed up with collars and wine baskets, or you could also weld some leaf filigrees on there as well. It wouldn't look quite as natural as the ones made with hand bent .250" rod in random patterns to anchor foliage to, but the picket panels can be knocked out in a day vs. the better part of a week for the artsy ones.
If you do go with pickets, start in the middle and work out; I'd always use spacers to get a 3.875" gap as we were told that the code inspector used a 4" plastic ball to check spacing. Cut the stair rail pickets at the angle of the slope, it takes a bit longer but the fit up is much better. If it's going to be powder coated, drill vent holes at the bottom so the pressure won't push oil out of a pinhole and mar the finish, and if it's going outside they will act as drains, because water will get inside here in the NW.
