Why are we so willing to spend other peoples money?

Adding another zero on the budget. Then we might get somewhere.

Now don't be such a cheapo 4570, you just know with all of us working hard at it we could easily add two more zeroes... :D
After all, that's what we do best.

You are right. After all he is trying to clear 100 acres. He needs a 200,000 dollar excavator.

I'll throw a different perspective.

The forum insight provided was very helpful for my decision process. Despite perhaps convincing me to get a larger frame tractor, there are a lot of insights and very informative posts on these forums. In particular for someone who has never had a tractor before. It will be a long time until I know if I made the right choice or not, bad choice or not, but your insight allowed me to make an educated 'better' guess.

There is a huge variation of people here. Different means, values and circumstances. You can't expect such a medium to address all that. Very often the wrong questions are being asked.

I have more passion for equipment then I do money. I have no one telling me what I can and can't have. I usually decide what kind of thing I want and then look to see if it exists. Rarely do I see someone with something, and say, I want that!

I go far out of my way to acquire what I have. Most people would not, it seems. Get up at four in the morning, drive six hours to an auction and spend another eight hours there just to get some cool piece of equipment.

So yeah, everyone is different. I guess my perspective based on my passion for this stuff is that you don't necessarily need to do , or get what everybody else has just because the herd says so.

Well If I had a 1/4 acre to mow, I'd only consider a brand new Boeing 747 Extended cab model with GPS, global auto pilot, LED Landing lights, a fully stocked bar and leather seats, extra fuel tanks and a great stereo plus A/C. All 4 engines electric start too in case my solar powered leaf vacuum can't do the job. Me and the Mrs. only eat out 6 days a week so I don't have time for tractorin. Once that jet fuel lights up, the grass is good to gone for a week without even taking off. Yep, the 60 stall shed I recommend, too so it don't get weathered. Order tractor wax by the 55 gallon drum can be expensive. (don't put it on the wind screens). Make sure you have a gubmint job to pay for it all (and a sales tax exempt certificate from Rural King). Pressurized cabin sure is nice and well worth it. Sure beats an open station piece a crap. Get a Chinese copy. A real one made here in the US of A gives them Big Boys way too much profit. Why, I wrote right there to the head honcho to complain about the huge wholesale price so I went and showed them boys who is Boss Hog, eh ?

Good, Fast, Cheap they say. You only get to pick 2.

Spending other people's money is much easier on the budget than spending mine. :D

This is sure an old post that's been brought back to life. But it's still relevant.

I take the position of asking a question and expect answers of all kinds. The most useful ones are those that explain why with their recommendation. That way I can see if their experience matches mine and/or my expectations and mostly whether I've considered everything I should. Then I'll make my own decision as to what I do, with far more knowledge than I had on my own. I have changed my plans based on opinions I've received on this forum, primarily because y'all pointed out things I'd not considered.

My dad used to say: Learn from other peoples mistakes because you'll make enough of your own, you don't need to repeat theirs.

All my Dad ever asks is "Have you SOLD anything lately" ? Or sees something new and asks, what is it and can you sell it? Gets old! We are all different.

But it's sad when people have no real passions of their own. Often just what the herd dictates. Leather appointed vehicles, granite countertops, plasma TVS, and people wonder why they feel so empty?

While it may be good advice learned from years of personal experience - it could also have a lot to do with fulfillment of ones own desires/dreams.

I'm living my dream, a champagne life on a beer budget, had to move to NC to do it, and I just bought my fourth tractor, albeit something ancient and cheap.
So you bet Oosik, forty years of work to get my own little farm.

I have no wife at the moment and no kids so no constraints, so why not invest in farm equipment? As long as I buy it used enough so it doesn't depreciate, net worth remains the same, just another asset that CraigsList can liquidate if need be. My oldest brother, my executor, constantly harps at me to get rid of stuff, You have too much stuff! Guilty as charged your honor.

I do think the OP's question is elsewhere though, why we always want the best for our friends, so they should get the "better" model, the more reliable one, and usually that means more cost.
So if that shows a willingness to spend someone else's money, seems reasonable to me. But unkind if recommending a 50 grand tractor to someone you clearly know
can't afford it. With machinery, it's usually with a price range. Some are reluctant here for various reasons discussing expensive purchases online, but if given a price range, I bet
the suggestions will come in at the high end of the price range, not the low, which proves the OP's question does it not?
