Tying knots

There are two knots I can tie properly. One keeps the boat from floating away from the dock. The other keeps the lure on the end of braided fishing line. None else matter much.

An unnamed fishing line knot and a bowline.

I was a scout. I love knots. Forgotten more than I remember. Do like the taut-line and especially the bowline. Then there are the fishing knots!

But if someone can tell me how to tie my leather laced slippers without them coming apart I would be grateful. :pullinghair:

Try that knot I mentioned above for shoes. Works on all laces.

Square knot, taut line, clove hitch, truckers hitch.
If your shoe laces are coming apart you are tying a granny knot, try a square knot--left over right and under left over right and under.

As an Eagle Scout, I used to really enjoy knowing as many knots as I could and using them when I could. I even built a tree house with my brothers using just rope to tie all the boards to the tree, and then built a rope bridge to get to another tree about 50 feet away. But now I rarely use rope for anything. Ratchet straps are easier and better for holding down loads in my truck, and chains are better for dragging stuff around.

There was a time in my life where I spent all available time offshore fishing so I was very much into marlinspike seamanship and learned to do many things with lines and ropes...
I was also deft at tying sophisticated fishing knots like the Bimini Twist and others...
...Unfortunately arthritis in my hands makes it difficult to tie any knots these days...

Arthritis is one of the main reasons my father-in-law quit fishing. His hands just don't work well enough to tie knots, let alone pick up a hook from a flat surface. He can still hold his beer if you put one of those foam coolers around it, though! And isn't that the best part of fishing anyway?

The greatest thing about fishing is that even if you don't catch a fish, you've still wasted a day.....

If you don't know how to tie the right knot, tie lots of 'em! -credit to my Navy officer friend.

Lol. I don't think that statement has gotten twisted a bit from its original meaning! I honestly think that the original saying was something more like "If can't tie a knot, tie it a lot" meaning more like practice it a lot and it will become more like second nature to tie it flawlessly and quickly. Just my $.02!

I used to be able to tie over 30 knots at one time. I'd have to sit down for an hour or two and see if I can still remember them.

Common ones I use:
Bowline
Locking Bowline
Reef
Tautline hitch
Round turn and two half hitches
Sheepshank
Figure 8
Double figure 8
S-knot
Fisherman's knot
Sheetbend
