YouTube can be a major time vacuum for me. Once I get sucked in, I can be there for hours. I don't do that as much anymore since we have limited data on our HughesNet, but before I got married I used to stay up to the wee small hours of the morning on weekends, just flitting around YouTube. Most times I would be watching gun videos by Hickok45 or FPSRussia, but occasionally I would go off on some strange tangent inspired by those sidebar suggestions. I've wasted a lot of time there over the years.

Got a nice Christmas Card from Liberty Mutual yesterday, declining to renew my homeowner's insurance. Not surprising, really, what with all the big fires near here and to the south. Talked to a local independent agent who was very busy writing "non-standard" policies with Lloyds of London and other companies that aren't registered in California, at twice the going premium charges. I've got feelers out to friends and neighbors to see what they plan to do, but my bet is that the problem is going to be very wide spread.

I had told my wife that I expected insurance premiums to go up nationwide after the California fires, but I didn't expect insurance companies to be cancelling policies, or declining renewal. I don't even know what companies write policies in California, but so far I've not been able, in Texas, to beat AAA for both home and auto insurance.

They said the flu shot has only a 10% chance of stopping the flu and my poor fluy wife will agree. She is the 90%. The Dr. put me on Tamiflu since I'm now exposed to it. She got her flu shot at the Hospital I got mine at the grocery store in Giddings.

Don, do you get the standard or the HD flu shot? We've gotten the HD the last few years; can't say whether one is better than the other, or whether we've just been lucky so far, and of course, we still might get the flu but so far, not in a lot of years. We have gotten ours for several year at a Walgreen's pharmacy, but this year we got ours at a new CVS pharmacy that just opened in this neighborhood.

64°F and no rain

Early off to HD for my Trex and stuff.

Then stop at PO in hopes my misshipped Dish remote is there.

Sears Home Services die later this morning to look at the dryer. I think one of the switches may be going bad.

Be safe
Have a great day.

Never heard of this...but I think I want to try it:

As legend has it (or Wikipedia, which is basically legend), Reggie Cunningham coined the term pickleback at Bushwick Country Club in Brooklyn in 2006. Such a weird but simple idea, the type which you swear maybe you tried once or twice long before 2006 but were too drunk to really recall. But you probably didn't: Rob Magill, co-owner of Whiskey Town and its family of bars in New York, also believes that "the latest craze of pickle juice that inspired everything from cheap shots to high-end cocktails" goes back to Cunningham, so let's just settle it and say Cunningham is the genius that came up with the idea.
The pickleback is simple: a shot of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle brine, that's it. And in just ten years it has become a familiar pairing with bartenders around the world. But as they're finding out, pickle brine can be used for more than just shots, and maybe should become a permanent part of your bar. We asked Magill and Filip Keuppens of the Pickle Juice Company about how to integrate the ingredient into more than just shots though those aren't so bad on their own.
Stay With Strong Pairings But Not Too Strong
Keuppens says the original pickle-brine-and-whiskey combo can be traced back to Texas, where pickle brine is also often paired with tequila. "Perhaps you need a strong flavor to be able to pierce through the alcohol," he says. Magill says pickle brine can work as a chaser to pretty much any liquor, as long as it's savory. "Vodka, gin, whiskey, and tequila work, but not flavored vodkas unless it's a vegetable-flavored vodka or infusion." However, Magill stays away from heavily smoky scotches. Rum may not also be the best choice given how sweet it often is, though the Flaming Toad combines Bacardi 151 and pickle brine to some success.

Keep it Salty
The main appeal of a pickleback is that the pickle brine is an incredibly effective chaser, instantly neutralizing the burn of any alcohol. According to Magill, "It suppresses some flavors, which is why people who never drink whiskey or like it enjoy a pickleback." Magill attributes that to the salt in the brine, so avoid using vinegar-based pickle brines. But other than that, you can use the brine from most commercial pickles (Whiskey Town often used McClure's), or make your own.
Hair of the Dog
The Pickle Juice Company originated as a sports beverage company, after figuring out the properties in pickle brine help with muscle cramps and restore electrolytes like other, sweet sports drinks. With that in mind, pickle brine could be an excellent addition to the classic hair of the dog cocktail, the Bloody Mary. But it has other utilizations, from a replacement for the olive juice in a dirty martini or a Pickled Surfer, made with whiskey, pickle brine, lime juice and old bay. With those as options, who even needs the pickles?

Good Morning!!!! 48F @ 5:15AM. Mostly sunny. High 58F. Winds light and variable.

Seems like the weather guessers would be making a bigger deal about the very cold temps in the middle of the country, but there's not a peep about it out here. And last night the TV weatherman cancelled the chance of rain we had for early in the new week. :confused2:

Hope everyone out there takes it easy in the snow and is able to stay warm. Especially Ron!

Finished the last of the Cowboy Stew last night, and that last spoonful still tasted like more. Gonna need to whump up another batch real soon, and make sure some of it gets into the freezer this time.

All packed up and ready to head south at first light. First leg will find me in Lancaster, CA this evening, just a short walk from a nice brew pub. Temps are in the thirties down in the valley, so I'm going to need that extra layer and all the heat the electric grips and jacket can put out.

Cowboy a Stew freezes very well. I usually make a double batch.

Enjoy!
