I have a John Deere 310G backhoe with a leaking Crowd (Dipper) Cylinder. I fabricated a spanner wrench to loosen the retaining ring. The 1/4 inch plate bent so I made another one out of 1/2 inch. The ring diameter is 6 inches. I've tried a cheater pipe about 6ft long but still can't budge it. Anybody done this already? Suggestions? Photos attached.

Also (your link doesn't seem to work, so I don't know) sometimes you can unscrew the end cap away from the locking ring, without moving the locking ring. When all else fails (heat, as noted) you can always remove the locking ring by drilling through it edge-wise and cutting it off.

A dull chisel and a big hammer, some spray oil , just heat the lock ring a 1 or 2 inch long spot

Make sure (I’m sure you have) that there isn’t a locking screw (set screw) hiding somewhere. I may or may not have been stumped by that one before. They are tight but not usually 6’ Chester pipe tight. How big are you? Bi difference in 120 and 220

I'll second looking for a lock of some kind. I've missed, and after a lot of effort, found a wire that was locking it together that I didn't recognize. I've never had one that I couldn't get apart without too much difficulty. The hard part is getting it all back in there without rolling or cutting any of the O rings or rubber seals.

Now I take all my cylinders a specialty rebuild shop that my New Holland dealer told me about. Instead of paying over $100 for a rebuild kit, they just buy the exact parts that they need, which can run from a buck, to maybe $20. Add another $100 in labor and it's done in a day or two.

Finally got the ring loose and end cap loose. HEAT. I did not want to do it but I even started to bend the handle on my spanner and that is 1/2 in thick by 1-1/4 in wide. As I am no light weight on the cheater pipe, I was getting worried. So I got out my Victor heavy duty torch with a #6 rosebud and gently heated the locking ring. The heat was applied parallel to and around the cylinder. Heat is often used to release the Red Thread Locker so I wonder if that was the issue. Anyway, a 5lb hand held sledge was used to "gently tap" the spanner wrench. Voila. No long cheater pipe required. An I removed the $135 4ft pipe wrench from my shopping cart. Amazon has a lot of my money already.

I will get more photos during the disassemble and seal replacement process tomorrow. One lesson to note is do not remove cylinder linkage pins until after the lock ring is loose. Lots of leverage is required. As always, when removing hydraulic hoses, plug both ends to keep debris out. Even a small grain of sand in a control pack can be a nightmare.

Snow is that white stuff, right? Would you believe I used the torch on it?

Actually, we had snow once already. It was gone by lunch time though.
