I'm looking at the 39 0 1 tractor with a front end loader grapple and a 5' Bush hog. What I have is 40 flat acres and 2 ponds all in grass. Currently grass is 5' tall and has been cut in a couple years this tractors main job is going to be mowing and taking care of cows. Any suggestions on what I should what else I should look for?

A friend of mine purchased an L3901 this summer;he is happy with his.Only thing I can think of if you are going to handle large rounds for cattle you may want to move up in size.

I have a L3800 (the previous model to the 3901). It's a nice machine, but a little anemic with the front end loader. If I had 40 acres, I'd look at the L4701.

One thing the economy L's lack is cruise control for mowing 40 acres. I'd also look to move up to the L4701 or MX series to turn a 6ft mower and move round bales.

Any one know what the price jump would be?

Go to Kubota's website, build your tractor online, then knock off 10% to get on-the-street pricing. Some guys who are good hagglers can get a little better deal, but 10% off MSRP is a good ballpark figure.

Not to turn you off of Kubota's, but when it comes to their economy models, you're almost better off looking at some of the second tier brands like LS, Mahindra or Kioti. You'll get more features and capacity for the price. The key is making sure you have a good dealer for any service. You might also look at used. I see a lot of used 50hp machines that have lived an easy life.

When I bought my MX, it was about $4k more than the l3800. I got ten more HP, double the loader capacity, bigger tires, and a heavier more capable tractor.

Stick with the Kubota... The Kubota " economy brands " don't skimp on engineering, manufacture quality, or usability. I have the 3301, a great little tractor that does a job my MX is just too much for. Just throw weight on the back and you'll have a great tractor.

This isn't said often on here, but a L3901 gear drive tractor might be a good fit. Since you have to mow 40 acres you could throw it in gear and let it run. That'd be better than keeping your foot on the HST treadle pedal the whole time. And the L3901 should have enough power to push a 6ft rotary cutter. Would be less expensive to purchase too.
