Open carry / firearm handy

Having spent my life in the military and Deployed a lot, in the public sector I must say the sight of a weapon doesn't bother me as much as sometimes the site of the person who's carrying it.....

Half of my Deployed time I carried a long gun and a pistol, loaded. This requires a lot of self awareness and conscious thought. Not sure that is always the case in the civilian world today.

I believe most of the carriers on this thread share that awareness. But I also believe they are in the minority.

Ya. Have you seen the survey data on how often most people who do carry actually train (as in, just go to the range). It's kinda frightening.

Here in Houston, violent crime has gotten out of hand and carrying concealed is a necessity.

Sad to say this about a city where I grew up and was very proud of!

I grew up in Houston in the '50's-'60's and '70's. So frequently visited that it almost felt like I still lived there up until the last 6-7 years.

In the early years almost everyone I was around carried a gun and only some of them were cops. Most were relying on the defense of 'transporting large sums of money', loosely applied by the cops. My dad's business partner was shot in a home invasion robbery in 1962. He reached for his gun but the robbers had already pulled theirs. There were a lot of home invasions being done in Houston in the early '60's. Turned out that a very prominent citizen was behind many of them.

This is not really off topic because most people were carrying guns openly or otherwise but the Chronicle published a list of recordings done by a local crime reporter Marvin Zindler back in the '50's in Houston. Some are very interesting. I don't know if they are still accessible but here is a link:

The Roving Mike Archive - Bayou City History

A lot of Texans might be familiar with Marvin but probably not many know of him as the "Roving Mike" in the heyday of Houston.

It depends on where I am and what I am doing as to whether or not I'll carry while working with my tractor. The odds of needing it for anything are pretty slim, but you never know. Mostly I carry my small frame 9mm with some hollow points and also some shot shells for snakes. I'm not too concerned with open or concealed because I'm typically by myself or with someone who doesn't care either way. I'm not doing anything illegal regardless so I don't really care what anyone else might think about it if they see it. Besides, odds are anyone you run into out in the sticks or fields is probably carrying something also.

Lots of talk about which rifle to use.
I suggest you all look into the 300 Blackout.
I have built 3 in the AR15 frame. Mine were build from parts but if you have an AR all you need to do is change the barrel.
Bullists can be better than the 5.56 AK47 and the 30.30.
Can shoot subsonic if you want quite.

Love the Blackout!

Round is engineered to work in a short barrel, so you can have a pretty handy rifle even with a supressor in an AR platform. By switching ammo you can go from the ballistics of a 45acp (200gn going 1000fps subsonic) to a 30/30 or AK (125gn going 2000fps). Taped 2 10 rd mags together and have both types of ammo.

I usually have one on board when mowing for use and ground hogs. I have lots of both to contend with.

I'm a relative newbie in the educated firearm world. One of my buddies keeps hinting that I should look at a 300 blackout. Your comments make me more curious.

The main problem with 300 Blackout is that it blows up 223/5.56 rifles when loaded accidentally. There seems to be a lot of that going around.

Ya. Have you seen the survey data on how often most people who do carry actually train (as in, just go to the range). It's kinda frightening.

You also need to know that the only time most cops fire their weapon is when they qualify which for some is annually. Accuracy in a DGU is not a good indicator of how somebody trains or not. Unless somebody has been in that situation which carriers refer to as thread level red, it is hard to comprehend what is going on in those few seconds. Cops in that situation normally have an accuracy level of under 30 %

If I were in a position of authority/responsibility involving the police, I would require frequent training/range visits, etc. Seems this would not only be valuable to the officers but also for litigation protection.
