2 above and going to a high of 12 with 40% chance of flurries. Wind E 9 mph.

TXDON, how much snow is forecasted for you?

Thomas, there is your permission:
Last evening didn't go well working on generator,Mrs said "If you can't fix it this time (4th try)take it to dealer or replace it... we'll see.
You do know that some things just outlive their usefulness. Besides, if you replace it, then you will have an excuse to tinker to get the old one running for a backup to the new one. :D

Those of you having a 'snow event' (1/4") Stay safe!

Have a good day all

24 now, going up to 52, then Wed night it appears that nasty weather in TX is coming our way, some overnight snow. Temps are warm thereafter, in the 50's each day so it will melt soon.

Toppop, pics of the tractor please. What model?

This month's electric bill will be really high, plus 230 gallons of propane used already. I keep the house at 70 during the day and 69 at night, which I know is warm for many of you. Probably a 400 dollar month between the house and the barn. If I don't want mold all over my woodworking tools, I have to keep a small heater going in the woodshop. Plus they charge me 35 bucks a month to maintain the overhead barn light. When I moved here that charge was 25 dollars per month. That also includes maintaining a lot of poles and wires going to my barn, a long haul from the street, including two transformers.

Have the itch to go out and disc that field with the cow manure now in it. Also need to spread the triple 10 but might be a little early for that.
Have no idea how long fertilizer lasts in the ground. Tested the soil, a little alkaline, and had zero fertilizer readouts, soil needs some serious amendments.

Was expecting my diesel tank to run out by now, as it has for last two years, but since I used a lawn service last year, didn't put the hours on my diesel mower. Sure will this year. Filled up all the tractors, they are ready to hit the field. Fertilizer flinger on little Massey, then disc with larger Massey, then run that drag harrow over, and hopefully make some nice rows with the Super A. That's the plan. What's fun is I've never done any of this before so it makes for an adventure.

Depending on manufacturers fertilizer last 30 60 or 90 days depending on rainfall amounts

Drinking first cup of coffee. 14° with light snow this morning. Heading to 21° with off and on snow all day. Got to clean up drive and walkways today. Wife has a doctor appointment. Looks like 4" fell since yesterday morning. Looking at weather map. I do not see any Great Lake Clipper. Looks like a Texas Clipper is going to hit East Coast in the next few days.
Best wishes and prayers Riptides, Buckeye, Toppop, Ed and others needing them.
Good Morning All.

About 22 outside this AM. And I need to get outside. Last night was rough, about two, two hour sleep attempts. Trying to wean off a pain med, and it doesn't look like it is working just yet.

Anyway, been looking at the billing online. My wife is well on her way to a million dollars. I just had to grab the claims and dump them into a spreadsheet. This is going to hurt the wallet for the next few months.....

Have a great day all, be safe. Prayers to those in need.

I put in my zip code and got Zero plans. Here we have no choice. It's just Bluebonnet Electrical Coop.

Then I went back and put my zip code in Houston and got 63 choices. ???

Our total rate is $110.12 (includes all fees and meter)
(based on 1,000 kWh use) how does our non-competitive rates compare to your competitive rates Bird.

Don, I guess that's $0.11012 per KWH. Ours can vary month to month a bit because the more we use, the cheaper it gets per KWH, but overall for last year, ours was $0.101654291 while this year, for the first 11 months (I should get a new bill today) it's been $0.111992955. Because of the high usage recently, that should come down a tiny bit with this new bill. Of course that's including all fees, taxes, and $7.95 a month surge protection insurance. There's a $25 discount if we go over 1200 KWH in a month, and they show the base price is 8.8 cents per KWH if you average 2000 KWH per month. Ridiculous, right? But overall, I reckon your non-competitive rate isn't a great deal different from what I'm paying. Of course, last June, TXU's letter "recommended" a rate of about 12 cents per KWS instead of the less than 9 cents for our current plan.

Thanks
I didn't think to look on the bag...this is pretty generic Southern States fertilizer

I wonder if one brand of fertilizer is better than another. All advice welcome.

Application rate likely to be fairly high to make up for low readings on test samples.

It's funny that the soil did not test for any potash when one of the world's largest potash mines is across and further out the Pamlico River.
Would be a bonus if it were naturally occurring
Around here it's all about how much sand is in there vs soil. In the area I'm planting, the corn and potatoes area is a little richer/darker soil than where the fenced area is for
all the other vegetables. I've got cow manure down on about a third of that area, geez I would love a tractor trailer load of mushroom soil dumped here but it just isn't available locally.
So until I can build up the nutrients naturally, granular fertilizer is the way to go. Besides I think corn and potatoes really like fertilizer, or so I've read.

Am thinking 300 pounds an acre to start. Maybe I should double that, not sure what that gets you...and what is too much. I'm sure the only way to really tell is keep
doing soil samples. Might be time to call the local ag agent and stop guessing. Dial on fertilizer flinger shows rate per acre, which I'm sure is not overly accurate since it is stated at a specific exact tractor speed, like 2.5mph. Now a nice digital speedometer like on my Kubota would be great, but the little Massey has none of that. 2.5mph should be walking speed.
I can do this. ;)

52 degrees out today, can't waste this...particularly with nasty weather on the way.

None of the forecasted rain, snow, and sleet has yet arrived, and now the NWS has even taken it all out of the forecast. So, it's 17 degrees going for a high of 30, but a low forecast for tonight of 8 degrees.

For yards I would go to local golf coarse and ask them what use that's how I found out about the different grades. For farm type use extension agent would be a good choice. In general just like most things you get what you pay for

Good Morning!!!! 49F @ 5:15AM. Considerable cloudiness. Slight chance of a rain shower. High near 55F. Winds light and variable.

Picked up about 0.04" of rain since midnight and from the radar images it looks like that's all we'll get until Wednesday.

Hope everyone in stormy winter weather stays warm'n'safe!

Maybe a bicycle speedometer could be adapted to your tractor, Drew. Wireless versions are available to simplify installation. Maybe Mostly Gas can chime in with a recommendation?

First of the new flanges I tried was a very tight fit on the splines, and that's a good thing, but it had me wondering if it was the right part. Wire brushing the axle helped, as did a smear of moly grease, but in the end I just got it started by hand and used the axle nut to draw it down the rest of the way. The other side slipped on freely, so that spline is probably worn a little more. Hopefully this set will last another 5000+ hours.

Nice ride down to the dealer and back; very light traffic, not much sun but not really cold, either. Bike still taking a long time to warm up in spite of the Chevron Techron I've been using in the gas. Maybe time for some Sea Foam, or just pull the carbs and give 'em another bath in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Got one bolt replaced on the old motorcycle in the time left after the Kubota was fixed, and I need to turn down an old 10mm socket today to finish tightening it. Gotta love that carbide lathe tooling.

Hope everyone enjoys the day!
