Skunk Advice

   / Skunk Advice #61
After the second one I trapped and shot let loose and dribbled the stinky stuff next to the house we were out for another week. I then got smart and tied 50' ropes on the traps so I could drag them into the field behind the house and dispatch them. I had Googled 'range of skunks spraying' and Google said it was 20-30'. So I got fifty foot ropes for all four traps.

Managed to pull the next one about two feet before the rope broke.

Stupid skunk had chewed the line apart. I swear the thing was sitting there grinning at me.

I had the last laugh though. Me and the 12-guage.

I hate skunks.

One lady we talked to had a couple spray under their house. Farm Bureau Insurance was out $17,000 replacing her central unit, ductwork, and other items. Insurance agent told of another couple who had a large house that the skunks got in the ductwork while they were on vacation for a month. The agent said the people would have been better off if the house had burned.

I hate skunks.

For sure - RSKY - for sure. At fairly close range - I shot and missed a skunk with my 22. The dam idiot spun around and came running right at me!! If I would have had the 12 gage - this would not have happened. But as things were - I turned tail and ran like a drunken goat. Fortunately, the skunk ran 20 feet or so, at me, turned again and ran right smack dab under the house. After about two weeks - the odor sort of got less or we just got use to it.

Around here - SKUNKS DIE.

The peroxide, dish soap, baking soda mix works wonders for skunks.

We had a mini dachshund that would kill anything but skunks. When it came to skunks, the darn thing would try to sniff it's butt  Dachshund would creep up on the skunk. Skunk would take aim and shoot the dog between the blinkers. Dog would do the fish flop across the yard, bail into the kiddy pool and almost drown itself. This would happen daily till I could find and dispach the skunk

I have had better luck with the 12 gauge than anything else. It seem like "overkill", and that is just what I want. DRT. Dead Right There. I have used other guns in the past, but the 12 gauge is my choice.

Just use skeet shells and it doesn't cost as much. I can shoot 4 12 gauge skeet shells for the price of 1 410 shell.

We done' get too many skunks or racoons any more. I clean up magpies and grackles around the yard. I find between that and no cats we have a lot more song birds nesting in the trees.

I always used my reloads of #8 shot, so yeah same thing.

We have a live trap that is wire all the way around. We just shoot through it with a .22. They pretty much always spray. Thing is, once they spray, their supply is spent for a couple of days before it can rebuild. So if it has sprayed recently, it may not when you shoot it. If not, well, it's under pressure in there, so once the muscle relaxes, out it comes. Shot one once on the top of the bank along the lake. It flipped over on it's back, and sent a spray arcing through the air. Couldn't get close enough to move it for a couple of days.

If you're just going to relocate it, you can walk up to it behind a blanket and throw the blanket over the trap. cover the trap, and you can pick it up and cart it off. They won't spray if they don't see you.

Skunks have six shooters, I wouldn't want to bet they fired their last shot. How Many Times Can a Skunk Spray? | Cuteness

Not sure about other states, but pretty sure it is illegal to relocate a skunk in MN. They need to be dispatched.

Thank you for all the great advice, and for so many of you confirming that the Baking Soda, Hydrogen Peroxide and Dawn dish soap combination work the best. I bought all three at the store yesterday and we put them under the sink, along with printing out this link from Mace. It might not happen this year, or next year, but eventually, I'm sure it will happen, and it's nice to have a plan of action, and materials to deal with it!!!

Because it may not happen for a while,, remember to replace the peroxide annually,,
the peroxide will loose strength quickly,,,

Yeah, if you don't have the supplies, it'll happen sooner than later. Kinda like buying a new snow blower... ;)
