Gifts that cost you more

Anyone ever get a gift that cost you much more than the original gift? I got a set of 3 books (Gunslinger by Steven King) for Christmas. After I started reading them, I discovered that there are 5 more in the series. Now I have to buy 5 more to finish the novel.
I didn't think I would really like it since I rarely like Steven King novels but it is pretty interesting even though it is far out.
Oh well I did find the complete set for $70 used so maybe they will be here shortly after I finish the last book. Since I will now have 3 extra of the set, maybe I will pass them on to someone else so they can buy the rest later.:laughing:

Reloading equipment. Someone once gave me an old press and some books....a few years later I have way more than that now!

BBQ smoker...a small metal tray with some wood to use in your BBQ grill. That has turned into a real smoker and wireless thermometer and so on.

Ice fishing pole....I don't even want to think about the investments I have made since.

Your local library will have all those popular books and be happy to loan them to you for free. Many (most?) libraries support e-books now too if that's your style.

When I was a kid, my neighbor had a commercial rabbitry. He gave me an old doe. A year later, I had purchased breeding stock (from him) and had built a dozen cages, a 8x16' cover, plumbed in a watering system.....

If you have a library card...you can use overdrive and not even have to leave the house to check out (read or listen to) digital audio and e-books...

My wife bought me a spot GPS tracker for my birthday for the days I'm working the forsest by myself. Cost her $75.00 for the unit. Cost me $199.00 a year for the service. Nice......

45 years ago my siblings and I bought our parents a Franklin fireplace for their cabin. My dad mentioned to me a few years later how much they spent for the heat shielding, chimney, screen, tools, etc. It was considerably more than we had paid for the fireplace. They were happy to have it, though.
