Front mount blower options

I'm not justifying the use of a regular bolt, but please tell me where you can buy shear bolts for 10 cents. Mine are 10 bucks a piece.

It might be worth your efforts in ordering a flailmaster catalog and looking at the stuff they have.

Another option is McMaster Carr Supply company as they have a smorgasboard of tools parts and supplies of all kinds.

Fastenal is another option but I dont know what the count of pins would be per bag.

I know a lot of folks just take a grade 3 or 5 bolt of the same length and hack saw through 2/3 of it to make it weak to allow it to shear quickly.

The problem is I have no idea on the spec. They are just an M-F part number, no obvious markings to indicate strength, AFAIK.

I guess, since I've never yet broken even one, that I'll keep the solid gold ones on the shelf and pony up if/when I need to replace them.

My experience is that grade 5 shears nice and clean while less grades stretch and burr the are hard to drive out.
Generally what causes a bolt to shear is a small pebble (on gravel drive) that is somewhat larger than the clearance between the fan and the fan drum.
This sudden constriction causes a shock wave that results in a sheared bolt.
The solution is to allow a base to build up and freeze b4 blowing operations.
Do that and you will have a 'sheer bolt free' winter.
The other option is to lower the skid shoes on the blower to leave about one inch at every pass.
My 'cure' was to create wider skid shoes (like 2" wide X 10" long) which solved all my problems.
Initially I would shear a dozen or more bolts but after my skid shoe mod I can do a winter without a shear bolt
replacement.

And. Hi Leonz!

Bonjour Mon Ami Piloon,

I hope all is well with you.

I can happily report that the Gates Series 1 A116 V belts work very well on the John Deere 47 inch snow blower. It rolls a bit coming over the top of the Pulley after it leaves the lower guide V pulley and when it enters the second guide pulley it transitions
back to a normal travel without twisting on its way back back to the drive pulley.

SO if you have a 47 inch JD snow blower with the smaller V belt or the longer A116 V belt you can replace them with the Gates Series 1 V belts.

I purchased my Gates Series 1 V belts through an amazon retailer and the first one was mounted on the snow blower last year and I also replaced a V pulley and it sat outside all year. I had no issues with the operation of the snow caster today to get rid of the End Of Driveway Monster either.

Piloon, the Toro Snow Pups were given the day off today and all they have done is bark and howl and complain about the green and yellow devil on the driveway. I will not get much sleep tonight with all their barking and howling.

Leon :drink:
