Buying Advice HST vs Gear Transmission - which would you recommend on this tractor ?

Hi .. Just need some guidance. I'm soon buying a new Massey Ferguson 34 HP with loader. Trying to decide on Hydrostat or Gear Transmission. I'll be Brush Hogging about 15 Acres a few times a year and using a Tiller for a couple acres of food plots.. Most of the use will be for these two things , but will use the loader at times for different chores , including snow removal.. The tractor does not have a cruise control function for the HST so foot pedal will be used for the few hours of steady brush hogging. Any recommendations from you guys who own either kind of transmissions ?? Thanks for any help you can give me.

HST. You can se the throttle and vary your speed using the HST given the variable load while hogging, snow removal and what not.

CVT for the win Trebeck, LOL.

Anyone with this question has to run them both and decide for themselves, end of story, period, DONE! Doesn’t matter what any of us Jackwagons say it’s all personal preference.

Thanks for all of the input and advice from everyone on the gear vs. HST question. This is a great site for info..I'm sure I'll be asking more questions as time goes on..Sorry for opening up the can of worms on the subject, but the answers were what I needed. After taking everything into consideration , the HST won. No offense to the gear folks..The HST just seemed to fit better for me.

I bet there is 100 hydrostat vs gear threads on this forum if there is a single one.! This has been going on long before I arrived here in 2009, and will be going on when I am long dead.

Several years after we're dead James, tractors will drive themselves and brake before you hit that tree. This way operators can text while they're on their tractor. Instead of the push for cars to drive and brake by themselves and if I were emperor, anyone caught texting while driving would lose one finger of their choice. If they kill someone, not only are they sent to prison, but they lose a hand.

You know if you think about it, a self driving tractor makes a lot more sense than a self driving car. Tractor speeds are by comparison very slow, and out plowing in a field or spraying or what not, seems like a safe place to do it. And you probably don't even need an operator in the cab at all.

Not to worry. Every three months someone asks this question and we go through the same thing, including all the thoughtful discussion, well-considered opinions, trash talk and insults. Sometimes the gear vs. HST foodfights can be pretty entertaining.

This is almost as good as a “which oil is best” thread...

I like hydro for tractors under 50HP.
