Shuttle shift usage Kubota M7060

Still confusing. So to shift I just shift and forget about the clutch?
A GST operates just like an automatic, no clutch needed. You shift gears & throw the shuttle lever from forward to reverse without bever touching the clutch.

In the couple hours I ran a GST I never got the hang of the shuttle timing. I used the clutch helping cleanup & pile limbs. But another few hours I'd have gotten it down.

There is a second or delay on some shifts which is annoying at times, at least on the 30 series I ran. A little delay on the shuttle lever, but it was consistent on the shuttle unlike the gear shift lever.

Neil at Messick's has done a video that demos a GST unit and explains its advantages in certain applications.

Kubota L4060 with Glide Shift Transmission(GST). Demo and Functionality. - YouTube

OK, got it and great video.

A GST is just like a hydraulic shuttle shift but with one difference. Instead of "gears", it has forward and reverse "ranges" (same thing) and you can change gears/ranges while moving and without clutching. That's all and that simple and I no longer fear that transmission. Watch the video.

So it's similiar to JDs old power shift trans. Still need the clutch for "inching".

I test drove a GST setup when shopping for my Grand L years ago. Ultimately went with HST but the GST was a nice setup. I would have had no problems using it but indeed found the HST easier for loader work. It did seem like a fairly complex system and it made me wonder how "idiot-proof" it would be as a rental unit, for example, but I guess there have been lots of L35's and L39's that held up well in such use.

I don't know about rentals, but my L4200 GST has held up well going on 21 years now.

Although I will be giving it up this Spring for a new L5060 GST. ;)

More or less. PowerShift is a 2 clutch system that shifts REALLY fast under load. GST has half the gears, 1 clutch (I think) & takes a second or so to shift. Different classes of machines as the JDs I'm familiar with were 2-5 times the machine a CUT us, but has the corresponding price.

GST is the Cadillac of gear transmissions on CUTs & SCUTs. Personally I'm not familiar with JDs current CUT transmission offerings, other than a nice HST. That HST was nice, smoother than Kubota & had a nice sensitivity knob rather than 1 button that also ran a million different other functions. No 2 speed shift under power HST+ equivilant on JD though, otherwise I'd have looked at JD harder for my L4060hstc.

Around here, used GST's will sell for less than other transmissions. I now will say that's because of user ignorance and that might be an opportunity for me to trade up and get something I can use and at a great price.
