Ls xr4040h
I've got a 2013 xr4040h with 160 hours. Tried to use it today, and the pto won't engage. The fuse is good, (unless there's more than one), and it doesn't even try to kick on. It's as if the switch is still off. Any ideas what to check next? I'm new to working on tractors, so over simplified answers would be great.

Could be a bad switch. Will need to do a continuity test on the switch to determine this.

Or a safety switch that has come unplugged or something along those lines?

Checked continuity on the switch, here are some sketches I drew on my phone. The first is the pin configuration of the connector on the switch. The second is the continuity in the on position, the third in the off position.

Let's assume the top left terminal is 1, top right terminal is 2, bottom left terminal is 3, and bottom right terminal is 4. According to the service manual for my XG3037, when the switch is ON there should be continuity across 1 & 2 and discontinuity across 1& 3 and 1 & 4. When the switch is OFF, the same continuity patterns exist. If the switch fails either or both conditions it should be replaced.

What do you mean by "the same continuity patterns exist" in the off position?

Here is a picture of the service manual page. Hope it helps.

Looks like an obvious error in the text on that page ---- at least if you look at the pictures and ignore the text. From the pics, I would guess continuity across 1-2 when "off" and then across 1-4 and 1-3 when "on". Or, it could be opposite. Get out the meter and see what you have now.

I've got continuity from 1-2 and 3-4 in off, and
1-3, 1-4 in on. And 3-4 in on of course. If I turn the switch to on while the tractor is running, but I'm not sitting it gives the warning beep like it should. If I sit, no beep, but no engaging.

Here's some troubleshooting info on my XR3037HC, Your 4040 PTO circuit should be the same. It could be your PTO switch is not disengaging item #5 (labelled DR) on page 3. If it is then the problem may be inside the valve itself.
