Recently picked up a new to me M7040 with 1000 hours and I'm excited to jump in size from the L3130 I had before. When purchased at an auction, I noticed the hydraulic connection at the bucket for a thumb and thought it was much easier and better than what I had done previously. However, I not sure how the thumb hydraulics are actuated. I DO NOT see a second hydraulic lever and only see additional electric buttons on the joystick that I do not think are related. Any help is appreciated.View attachment M7040.bmpView attachment M7040 2.bmp

Sounds like the factory third function set-up;I have one on my L4240.Buttons work the thumb;no levers.

On my Kubota loader, there's a single push button lower down on the stick that is "on/off" for the elec. to power to the 3rd function valve. It lights up when the power is on that supply's the 2 smaller almost "rocker" switch up by the knob on the stick that is the actual valve control.

Yep, buttons on the joystick run the 3rd function hydraulic couplers at the front of the FEL. Great setup. True 3rd function up to the capacity of the pump.

The buttons control a double solenoid valve. Probably located under your right foot when sitting in the seat.

You are very fortunate to have that system. It's very handy and functions flawlessly.

Now go buy more FEL accessories. :)

Good point Eric. If your system isn't working you've probably bumped that switch and turned it off. The design is a bit lacking and is very easy to accidently turn off and not know it.

True purpose is to deactivate the joystick buttons when not using an attachment so the system isn't deadheading pressure if you bump one of the buttons.

100% correct,I forgot about the "power on" button.Kubota factory third function would cost about $800.

Interesting, I have an M7040 with a Kubota loader and the neat little switch that allows me to run a grapple, siphoning off fluid from one of the other movements to run a third function. Anyone have a picture of the electric cut-off switch? I don't remember seeing one, and am not near my tractor at the moment.

See the little white button right and low in the pic. It's on the joystick stem.

Mine doesn't have that little switch, mine has a switch up on the top side of the handle for the loader. It diverts pressure electrically when it is pushed, and from what I can tell, doesn't do anything when it isn't pushed.
Thanks for the picture Ovrszd!!

Without a pic, I'm just guessing.... I think you have a diverter valve operated by that single push button. It ues the bucket curl function to curl (button released) to 3rd function (button pushed) but can't do both at once.

Appreciate the help!! I'll hook up the grapple tonight and give it a go.

Yep, sounds about right. Thanks!!

Hmm......so many different ways of doing it. I have the WR Long, electric over hydraulic system with a toggle switch on the FEL handle.

A self cancelling toggle that returns to normal function?

Yes - You have to hold the toggle in the up or down position. Let go - it returns to the center (OFF) position.

The system works great. I've learned how to "modulate" a direct on/off system - with quite a bit of practice.

Only improvement I would suggest - make to toggle protrude further from the FEL joy stick. Its difficult to activate the toggle with heavy winter gloves on.

I would venture to say that pic #4 is your new FEL control handle. Somewhere up on the top of that top knob there should be a button or toggle that controls - grapple open/grapple closed. Understand the third function system only provides ONE extra function - grapple open and grapple close. The remainder are the same as if you had the bucket on the FEL - up/down and roll forward/roll back.

I have a fantastic pic of the top of my control handle with toggle switch. UNFORTUNATELY - the gods of technology are saying "you do not have authority to perform this function". I WILL send the picture to you golfgooroo thru other avenues.

Its just simply not going to allow me to upload any pictures. What a true PITA!!!

If you have one button/switch, you have a diverter valve system. If you have two buttons/switches you have 3rd function.

The first performs a function in lieu of a different function. The latter performs a 3rd function in conjunction with the others.
