It had a 235 cu.in. straight 6 and a 4 spd. with super low granny gear, 6.17 rear gears, 20" tires. Was originally built for a fire dept. as a 1000 gallon water tanker so it had plenty of suspension to haul that much water on the back. Interior was basic. The body and frame were original with less than 7K miles but I did have to replace the motor.
1948? Your truck is gorgeous!

About 1970 I had a thick GM parts manual that covered everything in the engine and driveline on Chevrolet from 1937 to '53, with a '54 supplement. It was amazing how much was interchangeable throughout that run.

But the 235 subsequent to the scooper-dipper oiling (1954 for manual transmission cars, earlier for trucks and Powerglide) was the only reasonable engine choice to swap into an earlier model. I think it was a direct bolt-in for all years.

In HS I had a '37 Chevy coupe - still in nice condition - that I put a 1955 265ci - the first Small Block - into. At about 2600 lbs it was quick. Lots of fun.

I wish I still had that parts manual. I swapped it for something I needed at the time.

The parts manual you mention is a free download. It covered all sizes of trucks, school buses etc. and had all the specs. Here's where I got a lot of info.
1948-51 Chevy Truck Shop Manual
Same site has listings for most years, cars and trucks.

It's good to know the pre-internet detailed information isn't lost forever.

Not really about towing / hauling something wrong but several have expressed some interest.
I sold the truck a couple years ago but even though the bed was short it could have easily hauled a SCUT. I drew up plans for the flatbed to make it look period correct and had a local shop build that. I painted and installed all the lighting and built the rear tow hitch. Rewired the truck and converted from 6V to 12V. Pulled, inspected and adjusted the brakes, replaced Master Cyl. and flushed all fluid. Took first place in a couple shows I drove it to. Top comfortable speed was between 45-50 MPH, anything higher and the engine was screaming.

VERY Impressive!!! Nice job

Thanks for all the compliments guys. It's tough to beat the modern technology and safety of today's vehicles but I like the uniqueness of the body styles of cars and trucks from the 20's-70's when as a kid you could easily tell the difference between a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, IH, Buick, Olds, Mercury etc. and you didn't need a computer to work on them. Cars of today all look the same to me.

Are you putting it up for sale? Funny, part of our rational for buying the '13 besides needing/wanting a truck with less miles was to be able to take our boy (year and half old) more places in comfort and safety especially with the big 5th wheel camper to make more memories while he's young.

It was for sale, sold it yesterday and doing all the paperwork today. We did the camping thing before he was here and a little once he was born. We lived in it while we built our house so we could be on location during construction. After that we had zero interest in camping though.

I bought an 05 ford Dually that I’m in the middle of installing a flatbed on so we will still be able to haul and pull, it just doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that the 17 does but was loaded for 05

See if this works... I have my doubts

No photos but I read recently that a fellow stole some 40 foot aluminum irrigation pipes or such, put them diagonally through his vehicle and drove off, creased several parked cars before he was stopped. He said it was the stupidest thing he ever did.
