I have thrown out all of my Nicads, and now use only the lithium batteries for all of my Ryobi battery operated tools.
One good idea is to buy tools without batteries which Ryobi sells, and I have just 3 batteries for 6 tools, and I am never out of power. I don't use all the tools at once and don't need a battery for each one. It is cheaper to buy these batteryless and Chargerless tools. The batteries came with some of the tools when they were on sale for Christmas, and yes it is far cheaper to buy a tool on sale with battery and charger than just the batteries alone. I did wind up with 3 chargers which I don't need but one, but hey If one fails, then I will already have another.![]()
I also standardized on Ryobi cordless tools for that reason. I leave one charger in my shop, the other one is in the bag with my drill/driver kit which is usually in my truck.
I think I still have one or two NiCads, but it's mostly L-I ones. Christmas is a good time to pick up extra batteries...HD usually has 2 packs for just over the price a single goes for the rest of the time.
Yep, Christmas is the time to buy. I have let my NiCads go dead and I don't plan to rebuild them either. It is Li-ion for me from now on. The advantages are just too great to do otherwise.
