Too bad I was not so fortunate!!!

They all went on to do very well in life...

Threw in the reference to Moss Landing... there must also be a Moss Road???

The extra circular activities are greatly reduced because students are not permitted to provide transportation and if an even occurs the cost bus service must be covered.

We had a Biology Teacher that could make the tide-pools and ocean eco system come alive... his passion was the ocean and he would lead frequent Saturday visits...

It was right of passage to be at the DMV at age 16 to get your license... especially for the guys... the High School always had a shortage of parking... no more... few students drive and there is plenty of parking... the problem is parents dropping off and picking up.

I know a lot of 20 somethings that have no license... Uber is popular and headquartered here.

The days of scraping together enough money for wheels is long over too... kids I know would rather take Uber than drive the mini-van... there loss.

When you add it all up... especially in urban areas, it makes more financial sense to not own a car.

I've got 4 older sisters. Only one got her license at 16, like me. Two of the others didn't get licenses until well after college, and the oldest never got one at all. She takes the bus or walks most places. So does her husband. They have a car, and he drives on longer excursions, but for the most part, the car sits for weeks at a time.

Growing up in the 50s and 60s was wonderful for me. Freedoms galore and nothing bad that I was aware of. Played outside until dark on most days and had no worries. Life was a dream. Got my first .22 at ten and never thought it odd. Times were just so much different then.

Shoot, you guys living in bad, dangerous neighbor hoods that ain't noth'n...

I remember sliding around in the back seat of my parents Corvair! Hear tell it was unsafe an any speed!:shocked::D:D:D

What was really scary was standing up in the front passenger seat to see out of the windows. If my mom hit the brakes or went around the corner she would just hold onto me to sorta keep me in place.

That right there is illegal today. Bad Momma!:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

Around here (Maine), you need drivers ed before you can get a license if you are under 18. When that went through the number of teen licenses dropped. Kids used to get jobs, borrow a car and save money for their own car.

But Drivers Ed is 500 dollars rural kids don't have - so they don't get a license until they are 18. Kills some of that independent drive.

Such fun! I loved riding on the back window shelf or in the bed of the Ford F-1. Can't really say it stunted my growth any.

Yet every year we hear about kids getting injured or worse from lawnmower etc. accidents...

But in the good old days a lot of kids never made it past childhood, today all those sissy rules save life's. An example as cycle helmets do really save many life's every year.

Yet every year we hear about kids getting injured or worse from lawnmower etc. accidents...

At 8 years of age I had a Saturday route mowing lawns... charged .25 per lawn... these were residential lawns... also painted fences and turned over soil in the Spring, weeding... etc.

All of my nieces are very accomplished... they have full schedules with Olympic Dreams... train at 5 am each morning and then again at 5 pm each night except on Sunday.

That said... I asked the 16 year what she did for money... she said she makes $20 per half hour giving private water safety lessons to infants and toddlers... that is $40 an hour... but of course it works out to about 12 lessons in an 8 hour day... earning $240...

My first real job at age 12 paid $50 a week and was at $1.65... had withholding, Social Security, etc...

I was detailing cars for the most part... then moving them around the lot, making minor repairs like wiper blades, check fluids, charging batteries, airing tires, light bulbs... etc.

My 12 year old niece makes $15 an hour baby sitting... often the Mom who has a home business simply wants my niece to come over and "Play" with the twins to keep them entertained...

Kids today have some great opportunities.... this is the same one that sold her 4H pig for $800
