I want to weld a 2" X 4" X 1/8" channel to flat bed/floor and against a wall so I have some 2" vertical fillet welds at floor level to do. I have an AC stick welder. My question is what stick angle and weld direction should work best. I was going to try a down hill weld with a flat stick angle parallel to the floor with 6013. But before I try that I thought some advise on the best technique would be very helpful. Thanks

I would never go down hill with 6013! The slag will get in front of the puddle, and give you slag inclusion.
I would use 6011 for down hill welding. I really like Hobart's 335A 6011.

And 80 - 110 amp with 1/8 rods, 45 - 85 amp with 3/32 rods.

6013 does downhill, I've done a fair bit that way. But not at the angle he's describing. Needs to be pointed up to keep the slag at bay.

I agree that 6011 will be much better in this position, and run at the upper portion of the amp range recommended on the box.

Gordon, if I may, a little advice. Practice until it's near perfect - grinding out a small vertical from floor level would suck and/or be nearly impossible.

Thank you all for the advise. 3/32" 6011 it will be. I'll give it a try in the morning. A big 10-4 on the practice pieces and problematic grinding.

Edit: I've never used a flat angle like that before.

Sometimes bending the rod can help your angle.

It breaks the flux where you bend it, so you bend it leaving just enough rod to make the run.
