Gonna put a mid mower deck on my older BX

/ Gonna put a mid mower deck on my older BX #51
Many of you on this thread have a lot of experience in mowing with the BX series. I am thinking of putting a mmm on my BX23. I have a simple question that I have not been able to find the answer to. I mow about 5 acres of rolling ground. Do you mow in high range or low speed range? I know this is a basic question but I tried using my 72" landpride finish mower behind my BX23 and it was too much mower for the tractor even in the low speed range so I only use it behind my Allis 5040 now. Also would you happen to know if there is much power difference requirement between a 54" and 60" deck?
Thank you,
AMetcalf

Low range, go pedal to the floor. High range is too fast, period. If cut quality doesn't matter, and your back can take bouncing around, hammer down in high range, but you won't like it.

Can the Kubota MMM be converted to use a hydraulic cylinder to raise them to free up the 3pt?

Wow, AM, Mowing 5 acres with a 54 or 60 inch mower sounds like no fun to me, especially if the ground is rough. I'm thinking using the 72" behind either tractor at a slower speed will result in less time spent mowing.

The 60 inch on the BX is better then a 72 behind, the 72 is just too big for the BX Have a 48inch brush cutter and you can feel it swing you around the 60 inch rear finish mower is just as bad.

The 3pt doesn't lift the deck like the B-Series. However, the same lever raises both. Raise the MMM, lock it in the up position, and use the 3pt all you want without moving the MMM. Or, short chain the rear implement, and raise/lower the MMM independently.

Could you elaborate on 'short chain' please?

:D:D A 72" Landpride finish mower on a BX!!!!!!!!! I had a 72" Landpride finish mower behind a B7800 31HP after having a cheap Red shiney finish mower that was junk on it and when I would reach the bottom of my yard (Going slightly down hill) the LP would swing my tractor around. Got used to it so no problem but smiling at what it would do to a BX. I traded the B7800 to a Grand L3240 and the LP never affected the L3240 except going up steep hills the L would start slowing down due to the weight of the LP RFM. Never did it to the same HP 1000lbs lighter B. One of those times where weight of tractor wasn't good.
I think you may be pushing your BX and I doubt the BX will do it/pull it in Rabbit as fast as it will in Turtle if it will even pull out in Rabbit. That LP RFM is a tank and great and weighs a bunch. :2cents:

Re: Short chain.

If you look at the back at the 3ph, on a bx2200, you will notice a hole in a bracket on each side near the top. You can insert a short chain in that on each side, with the other end secured to the lift arms.

You have to experiment with the length. The MMM will not lower if it is held up by the chain. So you have to have the chain long enough to allow the MMM to get to it's lowest mowing position.

When you raise the 3PH, the lift arms will also raise, so you need to secure the linkage. If you just use a chain hook on the lift arms, it will come loose (I know).

Do you mow in high range or low speed range?
Thank you,
AMetcalf

Thank you guys for the help. The book speed of the BX23 in low range is 3.7mph so I have to do some math to see if it would pay to buy a mmm. Allis in 4th at PTO speed is 4.4mph so I guess I am better off with what I have. Neighbor/friend has a Ferris that flies across the ground. I tried it out for a few minutes and with the Ferris suspension system it was like riding a magic carpet. I guess for now I will quit looking for a mmm for my BX23 which I love and go back to dreaming about a Ferris. Thanks again for your input.

Thanks for that Ron. ‘Mine’ (belongs to folks I work for) is a 2230. I will have a close look next time I’m there.
