Bath fan won't pull much air. The ones in my home are hard to tell if they do anything but make noise. Maybe there's a hopped up one available somewhere.

I bought one of these
Suncourt 8 in. 2-Speed Inline Duct Fan-DB38E - The Home Depot
a few years ago, along with 12' of 8" flex hose, thinking I was gonna use a repurposed range hood and make a swing-away setup - STILL hasn't got to the top of my (mostly self-imposed) project list, so I can't say how well it worked yet

That style goes up to at least 10" diameter, it hadn't been mentioned yet - I DO know they're pretty quiet, tested it right after I bought it... Steve

I was planning on building something similar with an inline duct fan, ended up lucking out and picking up a Torit for less then materials cost, downside is filters are a bit pricy but I don't plan on changing them often.

If you knew what I paid for it you would probably say I suck! Got it off a gov. auction site and was suprised nobody bid on it. Little bit of a drive to get it but not bad.

This is my latest auction find, paid more then I like but still cheap compared to most, this was a longer drive too, picked it up a few days ago.
I think I may have a problem..........

Yeah, you suck
That's a heck of a disc sander and the biggest one I've ever seen!
That is what I'm looking at right?

Yup, a 1968 Kindt Collins Master 24" reversable, they make a 30 in also but they are harder to find.
Been looking for a 20+" for a couple years.

Came out of a vocational school but I'm guessing the teacher never let the students use it because it's in excellent shape.

Sorry I got the thread derailed, for reference my extractor has a 6in arm/hose and flows 780cfm.
I've seen some smaller units that use what appears to be a 2in or so hose (that looks like it came off a 1980's vacuum cleaner) but not sure on flow.

There's some inline 6in fans on amazon for about $130 that flow over 400cfm that might be a good option.

I really like all the creative ideas! One question: do we have to be careful with the velocity near the weld so that we don't suck away the shielding gas and affect the weld? Seems like some kind of hood over the welding table would work best for me, and I like the shop vac idea. So far, I've just been running the ceiling fan and leaving the garage door open about 1/2 way.

I finally got all the parts and got my fume extractor installed. I wet with a 6" 440cfm Vivosun inline fan for $59.00 that came with a vinyl cover to seal it and has a rheostat on the cord to vary the speed which I thought might be handy. I also came with a mounting bracket so I can permanently mount it on the ceiling out of the way. The fan works awesome and is really quiet. Very happy with it. I bought a 6" dryer vent from Lowes to get it vented outside. Got it mounted through the wall and it was long enough to mount the fan right to it which worked out great. I also got a 6" flexible vent hose, and a 6"x10" register vent to use as a hood.
