I do still have the original cable on mine, although it's getting a bit ragged, I plan to run it until it gets much worse than it is now...

SR

Oh come on Rob, your prolly just like most of us and will replace it when it has more than 2 ends

After watching your recent trials and tribulations OldPath I am glad I whimped out and cleaned the landing up calling it a season March 1. Just blocking up firewood now off the pile on nice days :D

On your busted cable - I am surprized nobody mentioned Labonville in Gorham, NH. They sell OnLine and will ship. At least they used to. Reed Supply in St Johnsbury VT and Northeast Implement in NY have web sites but you need to call or email for an order but they both ship. I have bought stuff from all three.

How did you find that page? I thought they had 5/16" cable, Labonville site was the second place I look at, I went up and down their website dozen times Sunday evening, I couldn't find anything but skidder acc I clicked on cable and chains and this is all that showed up>>> Power Swaged Logging Rope , no 5/16" cable, just the big stuff.

I just put an order in at Union Farm for cable and slides, they have it right there on the self and they had Two 8mmX133' cables, six cable slides, I need one cable and 5 slides so that worked out. But I'll only save $27.23 in S&H that's about it compared to Labonville, if I'd found that page Sunday night I would've place the an order yesterday if they could of got here by this Saturday, they should be able to, I've gotten orders from this place in 4 days>> Kubota Tractor Parts | Coleman Equipment I'm hoping Saturday is the big cable changing day, So what's the thoughts on winding in new cable, just hold it by hand, or tie to an anchor and pull tractor back?

Saturday we might still be pushing snow!:D I just pushed off about 9" and pushed the banks back. Looks like the weatherman might be right on this one.:confused2:
I uncoiled the new cable so that the "lay" was flat, hooked it to a tree or stump and wound it on pulling the tractor up a grade for tension.

I checked Labonville a couple weeks ago, after trashing my cable; and also was unable to find anything except skidder supplies. When I replaced it on my old Fransgard I got it at Mardens, for about 1/2 the price anywhere else. I had to fix the end with cable clamps, but that wasn't a big deal.

Mardens has a lot of logging supplies, and that is one of my go-to places. I also have a local gas station that carries a pile of logging supplies and for cheap prices too. That is nice. Harold's Logging in Hamden is another place that has a lot of logging supplies.

All good places for sure!

I have run about everything in the woods (except horses), and have actually done well with my farm tractor. It averages 6 cord of tree length wood per day and while I can slog out 10 cord a day with my skidder, the skidder burns 40 gallons doing it, and the tractor 5 gallons. Both net the same amount of wood per cord, so ultimately I am making more money with the farm tractor. Yeah I can get more wood out in a given day, but I am retired, my days of slogging out 100 cord a week are long over. FOOEY WITH THAT!

Granted the farm tractor is limited where it can go, like mud or long twitches, but my main logging roads are all bulldozed smooth so I can skip around pretty good. My method now is my logging trail coupled to the winch on my farm tractor. In this configuration I can fell, limb and then winch my trees up to the tractor. Grab the tree with my log loader, buck it into 8-12 foot sections, and then come out of the woods with 1/2 cord on behind me. With its powerpack engine, I burn 1 gallon of gas for that, about teh same for my chainsaw bar and oil, then maybe 3 gallons for the tractor because it is shut off most of the time.

I liked the bulldozer, and it could go anywhere and make a nice smooth path in its wake, but it was a slow lumbering beast too, and consumed its fair amount of fuel. It also had its fair share of maintenance. It was however great at towing longer logs out of the woods with the log trailer and keeping them clean.

Each has their place; knowing which one to use and when is the key to good logging.
