Bird, nice of you to cut grass next door. I used to do that as my full time job...got paid $3 per yard in my neighborhood growing up...using a 3HP B&S on a 21" mower...including edging with a push edger and sweeping with an old broom...sometimes I'd get a tip up to $4...saved enough to buy my first car that way...after years of mowing...I pretty much had the whole neighborhood (those that didn't do their own) until a new kid moved in.

The neighbor is 88 years old and can barely get around with a walker. I've got to take him to get a prescription and do some grocery shopping today.

I know I've posted it before, but growing up in the country, I made my spending money from my hogs, selling okra, pecans, and plums. But we moved into town, another town, when I was 14. So I had to do something different. I learned that all the paperboy. shoe shine, and grocery bagging jobs were already taken. So I did like you. I went door to door until I had enough lawnmowing customers. Our lawnmower was a manual reel type mower. So I soon bought a Clinton gasoline mower. After one year, and a bent crankshaft, I bought a Lawnboy mower. I still think Lawnboy was the best gasoline mower made. But then we moved again and Dad bought a service station, so I had to put in long hours at that for the rest of my teenage years.

Curious if anyone here is on Dish and has Hopper 3?
Our Hopper/Joey system was installed in 2012. With the new software interface seems slower than molasses - wife not happy at all.
Chat with agent confirmed it was the old hardware. I wasn稚 happy with the upgrade price offered, suggested it might be time for me to check out Directv. Supposedly a note added and suggestion I call Loyalty Dept. kinda irks me that my bill has increased $40/mon and all I have to show is old equipment and poorer service.

Been with Dish since '14. I haven't noticed any slow downs on my Dish Hopper/Joey, but like you I sure have noticed the price jumps. Last time I called, the "loyalty" department I wasn't able to get any reduction in the bill, and they as much as said "don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out". A couple days ago I got a flyer in the mail from AT&T/DirecTv offering me $300 to switch and new equipment for free. I suffered through the Murdoch buyout of DirecTv and watched rates jump yearly, sometimes twice in one year. ATT wants a two year commitment, and if my landline phone bill is any indication, after the contract is up, they'll start jumping both bills. I'd jump at the chance to go back to using a DirecTivo, but only if an HD version is available. But I think all the satellite and cable companies have come up with their own Tivo ripoff units, and in order to avoid paying royalties to Tivo, they don't work as well.

If the slow downs you're seeing were systematic, lots of people would be complaining on the Dish forums. A check there would be worthwhile. My guess is that the Dish person was blowing smoke up your skirts in order to sell you expensive new equipment. But the only way to keep prices down and the equipment functioning is to switch vendors every two or three years. Keeps the installers busy, but I sure hate playing the game.

It was 20* this morning for the low. We got about 6 inches of snow overnight. They are calling for snow showers tell noon today, with a high in the mid 30's and the wind 20-30 mph.

Need to go out later and move the snow around. Not much else planned for today.

Hope everyone has a relaxing Sunday.
CWB.

David, we have Dish with Hopper 3 and 1 Joey. Been working great. Now I'll always think of the Joey as a Sloppy Joey. Ours was a brand new version that was just released when we upgraded to it about a year and a half ago.

daugen,
I think of security systems and locks are only made for honest people. If someone really wants into this place they will find a way in. We don't have a castle law up here, so if someone breaks in and I am home, they can clean me out. I wont stop them.
I am looking forward to some pics of wildlife. We've only got bears, moose, deer, wolves, coyotes, bobcats and fisher cats to contend with.

Good Morning!!!! 38F @ 6:30AM. Sunny to partly cloudy. High 54F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.

Partly cloudy most of yesterday except at 5PM when a good sized cell came over and dumped a few tenths of rain. No lightning and thunder this time though, thank goodness. Sure sent the hummers into hiding though. The little dickens are almost getting through both feeders every day, a half gallon of nectar. I'll have to whump up another four gallon batch today.

I think your boy'll remember his eighth birthday the rest of his life. Hopefully he'll make a similar memory for your grandkids. Well done, sir!

When dad's Snapper finally bit the dust (he'd been nursing it along for years) he ended up with a Lawn Boy. When I got old enough to use it I spent a lot of time following it around the yard (it had a crude method of self propulsion that involved rollers rubbing on the rear tires). If the grass was the least little bit wet, the rollers would slip and turn the thing into a push mower. I got a few neighbors to pay me to cut their grass, but boy was I happy to get a paper route. I had hay fever really bad, and cutting grass nearly killed me. Had to move out to get away from doing it at home, and here I am back on acreage with the Kubota, biggest lawn mower I've ever had. At least this place only needs a trim once or maybe twice every spring.:D

That's some plumber's nightmare you've got there, Drew. Good deal they buried it so you don't have to look at it. Cops these days have their hands full just dealing with violent crimes. Petty theft, vandalism, vagrancy, it's open season for all of those shameful behaviors. No way the police are going to spend time busting litterbugs, and probably wouldn't do anything even if you came in with a video showing their face and license plate (not that the geometry of the situation would even permit that). Heck, it took me almost a year to get a dog catcher to come out here and write a ticket to the neighbor who let his vicious animal chase my motorcycle up and down my driveway. And I had to provide them with a detailed incident log and several videos. A long time ago, I had a neighbor whose dog would get through the fence and use my backyard for his bathroom. Took me a half hour to fill up a grocery bag with its business everytime I had to cut the grass. Finally I took one of those bags and went next door with it and knocked on his door. His wife answered and I presented her with the fruits of my labor, asking politely that they fix the fence and keep their dog's business in its own backyard. She started cussing a blue streak, threw open the screen door, and tossed her cigarette right in my face. I dropped the bag on her doormat and went home. Fifteen minutes later her old man was beating a tatoo on my front door, so I gave him the same pitch. Fifteen minutes after that I heard hammering in the backyard and the fence was fixed. Real pieces of work those two were. Anyway, if I had a receipt showing somebody's name in the trash they left for me, I'd be tempted to go over to their house and have a little conversation with them. With all the trash I'd picked up that day. But watch out for those flying cigarette butts.

Is your new system wireless, Bill? If not, was installation included? And how did they get the wires to everywhere the cameras were mounted? I have seven wireless cameras spotted around the property, and am experiencing a lot of network errors due to all the video traffic. Lots of interruptions and missed images, so I'm looking for something better.

Flushed out the fuel tank on the old motorcycle with parts washing solvent yesterday, and didn't find any leaks. Wasn't able to get the darn thing started, either, but did learn how to tell when it was flooded from over exuberant use of the ticklers on each carb. Pulled the plugs and blew compressed air into the cylinders and lots of gasoline vapors came out, so at least I know it's getting fuel. It was the end of the day by then so I left the plugs out hoping maybe things will dry enough to work better today. But that'll have to wait until I swap a fresh pallet of firewood into the garage, with all the attendant shuffling of motorcycles and tarps and junk to get things out of the way. But at least it's supposed to be a nice sunny day, a continuation of the bit of sun that came out after yesterday afternoon's shower. Oh, and there was a rainbow for a few minutes afterward, a nice treat for the end of the day.

It being St. Patrick's Day, there could be no more fitting an end than a couple fingers of Kilbeggan with which to watch the sunset, followed by an episode of The Thirsty Traveller where the host explores the whiskey trade in Ireland. Oh, and a Guinness to wash down the evening meal, though I had no corned beef. Costco chicken noodle soup al la Instant Pot or me...

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the weekend!

The sheep go up to a friend's farm where they have enough space for the lambs to be born inside and kept under cover for a couple of days. After that I get them back in batches of typically 10 ewes and 20 lambs. If the weather is bad I can then hold them back under cover in pens for another day or so before they go out into a field. Occasionally one will go and lay down in the wrong place and get hypothermia. If I find them in time I try and revive them in front of the kitchen range. It doesn't always work, this year bad weather has hit at just the wrong time.

Thank you, I now have another bit of info stored, never knew anything about raising sheep.

Good morning all! Low 33, already warming, but only to a high of 50. Have high wind warning for this afternoon, gusts predicted 50-55, possible 70 mph in the canyons.

Going to spend a little time in the shop, figured I could grease the tractor and clean it up a little. Won't be too strenuous. Maybe some NASCAR this afternoon, I was able to find an over the air station that broadcasts the races. Sometimes get it in, sometimes not. Almost looking forward the Dr's appointment tomorrow, hope I'm not further frustrated.

Take care everyone, prayers out to those who need them, have a great day!

Good morning everyone.

A cold sunny 20F to start the morning and the winds have calmed down. A beautiful late Winter day in NE.

Those turkeys have become a real pests at the bird feeders. I lost count ~50 the other morning. I have a very well fertilized lawn around the feeders. Their p** is almost as bad as a goose's. I'll be breaking down firewood today; they'll stay away. The ravens have figured out a way to get to the suet cage. Too bad about those zipties keeping it shut.;)

Drew- I can relate. We live on a rural road and there is not a neighbor w/i a 1/4 mile up/down the roadside. There are no neighbors in reality. Across the road is an "Honor System" farmstand that sells Cabot dairy products, local milk, eggs, veggies in season, and green face cords of unseasoned wood, etc. He has video cams all over his place, and he get ripped off regularly. He posts the perps names publicly if he can get id's from his videos. He has gone to small claims courts many times to see the charges dropped on the perps. It is the same people do this and always get away with this. He has a locked strongbox welded to a steel counter with a slit for money. All paper money/checks go in there. He keeps a box of small change for the transactions. It's usually empty and it gets checked through the day. There are a lot of financially struggling people out this way and most still have a sense of pride and civic responsibility and honesty..... Some do not. They even steal his cordwood; his video cams record everything. I will call him if I see "abnormal" stuff going on.

We have almost a 1/2 mile of road frontage on this road. It's all brush/vegetation along the roadside. The roadside garbage is still entombed in the snowbanks, but I'll be seeing the debris soon  I find all kinds of "distasteful stuff.":mad:

I agree with your "clinical" assessment.

It looks like the March 21-22 coastal will be more a MidAtlantic region weather event with elevation dependent snow and will track east of the "benchmark." It will be a very complex mix of weather elements.

LS- Good luck with the doctor.

My + thoughts, wishes, and prayers for all.

I hope that everyone has a decent day.
