Winter in Maine

   / Winter in Maine #21
Im from St Francis Maine, settled here in Lewiston Auburn area. Soon to be moving to Florianopolis Brazil just during Maine winters. I used to love Maine winters but only seeing green 3 months out of the year in full bloom has taken its toll on me. Will retire in Brazil half the year going forward until I really love it to stay permanently and sell everything here or hate it and move back to Maine.

I don't mind snow so much but the extreme cold and ice storms can gooooooooo.

The flakes are drifting down slowly - no accumulation!

Speaking of the coast, I used to link up with the Xmas bird count in Winter Harbor, Summer Harbor and heading over to Schoodic. Always cold and a biting wind! But beautiful. We'd end up at the canning factory in Corea.

We like the snow that's why we live up here and not down south :D ( no offense you southern boys )

Trouble is, the way storms have been tracking the past few years, coastal and southern New England has been getting way more snow that we have up here in ski/snowmobile country.

Of the 4 northeasters that have been in the news lately, 2 missed us entirely, one gave 4-5" (over several days), and only one gave a meaningful accumulation.
Granted, up here once it's on the ground, it's there until spring unlike southern New England where it melts within a week or so.

I suspect the cannery you mention was actually in Prospect Harbor...Stinson Seafood. I worked there in the Maintenance Department for several years. Closed down in 2010, there's a lobster processing facility there now.

I think you are right!

Winter is one thing about Maine I don't miss.

Stationed at Winter Harbor by any chance? That's how I wound up here. Stationed at the Navy base, 6/73 to 2/76
I can understand why you stayed, it's a nice area. Coastal, yet just far enough north to avoid all of the MDI tourists.
Ah. The definition of the actual physical boundaries of "Downeast" varies depending on where you're from. You're in far Eastern Washington County, so by one set of definitions that counts, but you're also quite a ways North of the coast so by another set you're not.

Washington county is BIG so you're quite a ways from me.

Yep, and a long ways from the coast; it's been at least a few thousand years since you could sail a ship to my dooryard.
I probably hadn't looked at my profile since joining, until you mentioned it; that's my excuse.

Very true. Unfortunately (I guess fortunately for the merchants) Ellsworth has grown by leaps and bounds and traffic can be pretty heavy year around. It's dang near unbearable in the Summer. You couldn't drag me into Bar Harbor at gunpoint between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Season is actually longer than that if you count leaf peepers.

Last fall I left carrots and parsnips in the ground, it will be interesting to see if they wintered over. So far all that I've done for spring is order my poultry and put the deposit on my pigs.

Where can a guy buy a couple of piglets for under 100.00bucks these days?

You've got me; I'm paying 110 each. The guys at the corner store tell me I'm crazy, i.e. "20 years ago I wouldn't even have paid $50"
Last year I raised two, the one I kept came out to 3.68$/lb in the freezer.

Wife wanted to visit Arcadia so we spent a few days last fall in the Bangor area with a day trip to the park. I hadn't been to that part of Maine since the 80s, and was surprised how built up it was. Bar Harbor was a zoo...might as well have been in Manhattan for all the traffic. And this was in late Sept., but before the foliage rush.

Our snow seems to have shut down for the year... :-( We still have a good base but some fresh stuff sure would be nice.

Arly, go to Wards in Dollar Bay and look at the ck4010 and NX4510 Kioti tractors with factory cab and front blowers.

The Deere dealer couldn’t come within a mile of the Kioti price, and tractor for tractor, the Kioti seemed to outperform / out spec the Deere.

I went into this last year certain that I wanted a Deere, but ended up with the Kioti and I am satisfied.

I see the snow level is stuck at 185” since I left the country almost a month ago. Hope it stays there, at least until I get back Friday night.

Don稚 want to have to fire up the tractor at midnight to get the truck into the driveway after a 21 hour flight.

The last time that I was on the island was Labor Day 1996. I watched the sunrise, looked around and was back across the causeway by 8:00 AM

There are quite few on CL right now for that or a little less. I'm not ready yet, and my pig pen is still mostly under the snow.

Soooo....when is spring coming? Just got some snow overnight.

   / Winter in Maine #36
We got some overnight as well. The base in our yard is about 2 ft and is slowly descending with above freezing temps most days.

AA, what did you get over the weekend. We got too much in Gaylord, MI, over a foot. Heavy wet stuff first, the temps dropped and continued snowing, the a break. Then today with sleet/freezing rain, etc. More snow tonight and tomorrow. I have had enough. Jon

It just started snowing seriously here late today, and I think we've got 6" or more by now. I'll post some photos we took today. We're still skiing up here and its great!!

Not a flake here, and it looks like we'll get mostly rain this week. We have pretty short winters here compared to what you get every year.

That is a great pic of the dog in the middle photo. Don't tell him it isn't fun.
