Junked cars on my hunting property

In many places they are called "yard ornaments"...

There is a very nice looking Chevy pick-up (50's vintage) sitting on a lawn not far from here...it's a planter box. I kinda feel bad because I learned to drive in a '49 Ford (no brakes but the clutch worked fine for stopping once we uncrossed the ignition wires (no key either).

My eldest Son has a 48 Chevy dual wheeled 1.5T truck sitting in his front yard.

My youngest has a 47 Dodge pickup sitting in his.

They are both complete. I salvaged the Chevy out of a junk ditch. Salvaged the Dodge off the roadside when the local Sheriff's department told me it was abandoned and I could have it.

High scrap iron prices have been the death of American heritage in regards to old vehicles.

Figure back in the 70's you could have bought a Camaro or Firebird or just about anything for peanuts (in today's dollars). People drove them until they didn't work anymore and hauled them off to the back 40. My grandmother's farm had old rusting Studebakers and other stuff just sitting there. Falling in love with the old cars is relatively recent. If we knew then what we know now, we would have figured out how to get them out of there (but that's true of a lot of stuff).

I was 7 when WWII started. Every farm had old cars. Two years later almost none - they went to scrap drives. I shudder to think of the great old iron that went through the salvage yards.

Yeah but again the interest in that old iron is relatively new (thanks in part to TV shows that focus on such stuff...those Las Vegas auctions are great to watch although I have a pretty good understanding of what it takes to bring junk to the auction floor and in some cases it's probably not a profitable hobby). We can say that about a lot of other stuff e.g. my mom always bought me a "gag gift" for Christmas even when I was in my 40's. They all got disposed of through the years but now we have a 4 year old running around and I try to replace some of my favorites...OUCH! Guess I know all about hoarders now.

There were some that were saved; a car that would run during the war was very valuable, no matter how old, and old parts cars were valuable too. People drove their old cars until they wouldn't move any more, or until they could buy parts somewhere. I remember my Dad putting tractor tires on the front of his '36 Plymouth. They sure looked funny; they were those with three ribs running around the perimeter of the tires, designed, I suppose, to hold them in the furrow.

My Dad bought a new 1939 Ford Coupe with two options, heater, passenger winshield wiper, for $650. He sold it to a school teacher when he enlisted. In 1946 he tried to buy it back. She wanted $650. He just couldn't do it. :)
