How to get rid of horses?

With good pedigrees you might consider having the horses broke to ride with basic training so they can be sold as good ranch horses. Young working horses still bring decent money around our area and would more likely go to a decent home and be taken proper care of.

I agree with this too. Not sure if you are a Facebook user or not, but if you are there are several pages strictly for horse and several for farm related. Try looking for or asking on those pages for reputable horse training services. You'll likely find a good source that can relieve you of your trouble makers and regime them to a great home where they will actually have a job. If you find someone willing to buy them, then that's just an added bonus.

Personally, I wouldn't bring up the subject until she is recovered. After that I would probably explain to her that you don't have enough acreage for that many horses. I don't know what the ground and grass is like in your area, but around here the rule of thumb is +/- 3-4 acres per head. Let her know that you would only sell to someone that would give them a good home. At 3 years old, they are perfect age for someone like me to buy and train, that said, I don't keep many of my own on hand these days and normally work client horses. I usually buy, train, then sell them trained for a profit. Another option would be sending them out for training, let someone teach them some manners and you may not dislike them afterwards. If you were closer, I could probably find a good home for them. If things keep going the way they are, the two trouble makers could also become flat dangerous, which may be another good talking point with your wife.

We have had to sell some of our most beloved horses in the past due to circumstances and it does suck, especially being horse people.

Rehoming would be doing the animals a favor. That is the route I'd go.
I might even dump them without telling her.

If a horse made a habbit of biting me, I'd be on the phone with the nearest petfood/glue factory.

As to how to get rid of horses, I was gonna make a joke about getting a Texas sized BBQ pit, but after reading the details, I'll skip the humor. Best wishes to you and your wife. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Once the two of you decide what to do with the horses, TheMan419 makes a good suggestion.... We have a therapeutic horse riding facility near us, and one of my daughters volunteered there for a few years. (I helped shovel manure with my tractor). One thing she mentioned, though, is that they look for horses that are mellow, non-intelligent, even downright boring, horses. They want slow horses that aren't curious about anything and kind of just stand there when people accidentally bump into them, fall off of them, etc... and arent' constantly looking for ways to escape, opening gates by themselves, getting into the food, aggressive behavior, etc...

But it couldn't hurt to contact them. Maybe they can take them in and use them to trade for suitable horses for their needs. Kinda like donating a performance car to a homeless shelter. They can sell it and get a couple practical cars out of it. Worth looking into.

We have a group called riding for the disabled which are always happy to take a potentially good horse, they have a lot of volunteers who are horse people who will train and look after them.
I think I have seen similar groups in the USA but I don't know in what states.
Horse bites are memorable and a great incentive to move them on but as others have said wait until the present ordeal is over as irrational thinking often accompanies that unselective bastard called cancer.

I'm confident that you'll do the right thing for your wife & the horses Eddie. She has to know "deep down" that they, or at least some of them have to go, 5 horses that just make chit out of bought hay just does not make sense. There are people & places that will take them off your hands, you'll just need to figure out the timing. Best wishes.

I hope the best for you and your wife...

"IF" all of that happened here, I would sit down and have a heart to heart with my wife telling her that I no longer wanted the expense and responsibility for them, that SHE is my first responsibility, and I wouldn't take no for an answer!

I know for a fact she would understand and they would be GONE FAST, even if she wasn't happy about it!

They would be GONE before she had any time to rethink it, I mean within days or a week I would have them gone, even if I had to run them through the sale barn!!

Sounds like you have been manipulated to the point of breaking. She has been told she is a princess so many times she believes it! Either lovingly stand your ground and get rid of the horses (after her initial temper tantrum you will both respect each other more). Or accept the horses and the 50 other ways she manipulates you as your acts of love to her. if that痴 the case zip it unless you have something positive to say. As stated above you can talk yourself into the negative feelings you are having now.

Easy to criticize someone else isn't it.

I'm not in your shoes, but you folks have my prayers for healing.

I can only guess that she's in an emotional state, and it could be a "live and let live" kind of thing.

Does anyone know if a 3 year old can be trained to be a good horse? I know about a thimble full of horse trivia. It would seem that they'd have too many years at being unridden and unruly.

What would/should it cost to train a horse like this approximately?

This is Peter315's wife.... we took in our horses to give them a soft landing, horses need training or they can end up in bad hands as some of ours came from those places where people take them and have no idea how to train them, the horse then gets pushy with the humans since a horse is a herd animal it will either lead or follow. Most people do not realize this, horses are truly amazing, gentle animals who just look for their leader. Ours have all become part of our family, would love to take those off your hands, train them and then find them a good home. Some advice, contact your local ASPCA / Humane Society and they will be able to steer you in the right direction to re home these guys. Your wife will be sad for awhile but if you can find a home where you can stay in touch she will be able to sleep at night, selling for slaughter is one of the cruelest fates where horses are brutally stabbed or beaten, abused before even reaching their horrible fate of becoming meat, don't be fooled, there is no humane horse slaughter! Euthanasia is the most humane way to end any type of suffering or unwanted life.
