Snowshoeing this AM was as good as it ever gets; I walked right across the top of the snow just like I was downtown. It was a good day to get out in the woods and look around. With no leaves on the hardwoods I could see a lot more and went some places easier than in summer. I also got a different look because I was standing 3 feet higher than normal.

Nothing to do with snowshoeing, but, I research my timber in Winter looking for trees that need maintenance or other projects. Much easier to look around. Reading your post I had a great vision of being alone in the timber walking around looking at things from a completely different perspective!!!! Only thing better would have been pictures!!!!
Sorry, no pictures. That is one of my main disappointments with most of Indiana..... almost to a T- there is a road exactly every one mile. North, south, east, and west... a road almost every one mile. Very few places where there aren't.
We have roads at least that close together here. Most of them are on private land though, and the condition varies based on how long ago somebody cut wood there. I can leave Millinocket Maine and drive halfway up the state to Allagash and never hit a tar or public road. After roads haven't been used for a while they grow in, and are a great place to walk with a shotgun and a good bird dog. Or you can hunt behind my Lab, but you would need to be a pretty good wing shooter- With a .22-250!

30 years ago we could drive out into the country, park the car, turn on the radio, drink beer and watch the stars for hours without ever seeing anohter car. Today, even on the most remote roads in the county, you'd be lucky to go 10 minutes before a car comes by.
He goes in the woods with me year round, I can't expect him to do things differently during hunting season. A better trainer could do it though, as he sure knows what a gun is for.

It rained hard all night. Still a lot of snow - but it is going. I heard some redwinged blackbirds today and the common grackles have been back since Wednesday. They nest up in the spruces overhanging my neighbor's and my yard. (I transplanted well over a 100 back in the 1980's - pulled young spruce 12 inches and less - right out of the wet clay ground, roots and all.) The grackles were eating some of the seed my wife throws out for the crows!
When I was more limber on my feet my wife and I would go cross country skiing in our back woods on the trails we cut. We'd go when the moon was full at night. With the snow and moonlight visibility was good - just a different look to things! -- I'd been remembering as the moon has been getting bigger and shining in through the windows!

I used to like night skiing also; it's a great cure for insomnia. :thumbsup: My neighbor is a bird person, every summer she gives tours on a local landowner's property. She told me a couple years ago that they're seeing some type of grackle which only shows up when the spruce budworm is around. Hopefully the moths won't be as damaging as they were during the last cycle.
