Nice job...rattle can or sprayer?

One day when all my hunni-doos are close to done......

I may do all orange....but the Rino cutter may run away from me as the sun faded red sees the orange can approaching....:D

It was done w/ sprayer. Oil enamel, added hardener / glossifier. Used little under 2qts of paint. There was minor surface rust specs on both, and I figured I may as well match the color of the tractor if I was going to paint them.

Going to build an implement shed in the future, maybe a year out at this time, so I figured protect them now. At least I have the tractor, backhoe, and PHD in the workshop / garage now.

Good job:thumbsup: What brand paint ,hardner, spray gun. What was your ratio .? How did the paint harden? I ve have been painting tractor projects and restoration stuff for years and I still suck at paint. Mainly use rustoleum with mixed results. Some get hard some you could scratch your name into it with your finger nail.:mad:The worst thing is they all seem to fade way to fast . I tried tsc implement paint and that came out the worst.Like to hear your formula.:drink:

Similar drive as you, I bought older used equipment and want it all color matched to my machine. So I clean them up, wipe them down with denatured alcohol, wipe grease areas with acetone, and slather on Rust-Oleum with a brush. It leaves a little bit of lines in the areas that I flood to deep, but I am okay with that.

I also order the stickers for brands and models, I just paint around the safety ones since I don't care much about them.

I know that I do not get spray finish quality, but I am very happy with the finish I do get. I have painted a good deal with the Rust-Oleum gallons and it always impresses me with the thick paint and how it covers and then how is lays itself smooth over night. It does take a few days to dry, so I leave the item in the garage for a few days while I wait for it to get hard. I don't use hardeners or anything, I just open the can and start brushing. It is a very forgiving paint for not so clean surfaces or dirt. Just paint the light/fine dirt/oil right in to the finish!

I too would like to hear your recipe in detail. I have painted lots of stuff with enamel but never used additives.

Curious if anybody knows. You can have something sandblasted but if there were rust blisters, these still show through the fresh paint. Any (easy) way of hiding those?

Body filler, AKA plastic.

So the paint... I was hesitant w/ using the " Majic" brand for TSC, but figured for the cost I'd try it. Was going to try the Rustoleum, but stores here including Lowes and HD didn't have the blue in stock. The Majic paint has very low VOC, made w/ soybean oil as base. Having previous experience w/ "cheap" auto paint, the hardener IMO is a requirement.

I purchased the Majic reducer and hardener along with the paint. I also had "wet look acrylic enamel hardener" left over from a paint job about a year ago. It was from "paintforcars.com" , look under paint accessories: acrylic enamel hardeners. A little expensive, but worth it. There is another site called tcpglobal.com which also carries paint / supplies, and I have subsequently used them for my paint needs. Their 2 stage urethane paint kits are fantastic.

As for the ratios: I don't ussually make big batches, at most a quart. This time, I did 8oz of paint per batch. I put 2oz of reducer, 1oz of the Majic hardener, and 1/2 oz of the wet look hardener. This amount perfectly filled my sprayer.

Speaking of the sprayer, I have a set of "good" HVLP sprayers. I happened to be in Harbor Freight the day before I was starting this paint job and saw a cheap sprayer for $15. Found a coupon for it fo $10. Figured it would work for the job and then be a 'throw away'. No way... Worked absolutely perfect, adjusted fine, maintained the settings, worked great. Couple guys previously recommended getting the $20 on sale gun, Apparently you can change the seals on those. I may have to get one of those for the next job.

Anyway, the tip was a 1.4, I set the pressure right at 55 psi while flowing (1/2 pull of trigger), jumped up to 65 psi while closed. Set a spread pattern at about 5", sprayed about 12" away. The paint layer went down real nice w/ these settings. I was surprised that I didn't get any runs at all. I anticipated quite a few on the pieces hanging because they were pretty complicated surfaces ... bends, edges, curves, etc... Not one run!

The drying time was definately faster using the hardener. The sides of the box blade were tacky at 3 hours, smooth to touch at 6 hours. THIS ENAMEL PAINT DOES NOT CURE FOR AT LEAST 72 to 96 HOURS, depending on temp and humidity. The pieces can be handled after 12-24 hours, but you will be able to easily scratch or peel the paint this soon. After about 3-4 days much harder, after a week, really hard. I painted an old dodge Ramcharger a few years back w/ oil enamel and it took almost a week before all the paint was cured.

A REAL IMPORTANT STEP is to make sure all grease and dirt are cleaned off. I used "professional grease and wax remover" from NAPA. It works really well, dries fast, takes off grease in a couple wipes.

Another IMPORTANT THING NOT TO DO is put another coat of paint over partially dried area. If you spray over the first area you painted and it "flashed" or dried to the 'tacky' point, the paint will orange peel, run, and take forever to dry. This is due to the underlying paint off-gassing and your actually stopping the process... Don't ask me how I know this... The instructions say to wait for second coat AT LEAST 24 hours. This paint went down great, don't think I'm going to second coat it... No need.

I do the same with brushed on Rust-Oleum, I'll do a coat of paint one evening and then wait until the next evening to slather on the next. It also takes Rust-Oleum a couple days before I would even consider moving the part outside. In the case of this mower, I'll leave it in the garage until this coming Friday or Saturday and that will be 4-5 days in a dry/heated garage before it goes out to meet the sun and rain. I will not put wax (synthetic sealant) on it for a couple months. I do actually wash and wax my tractor, garden tractor, implements, vehicles. I don't know why, but seeing water beading up on paint makes me all warm and fuzzy inside :)

My two neighbors laugh at me for washing my tractors after using them, but I do a lot of spraying with sulfur and other fungicides.

Someday, I may want to sell them, and can’t help but think the overall condition of the sheet metal will be a factor in attracting a buyer.

I keep hearing good things about the HF paint gun, I think I will try one out on my 25 year old scraper, if it turns out badly, It won’t ruin my day. Got one blue tractor, and one green one, so have to decide what color to use.
