OP, you guys have a lot less snow than we have 150 miles north. There's still a couple feet in my field, even more in the woods.

Snow yeah we had that, the before and after picture from the same place in the woods, this first picture was 4 weeks ago>>>>>>>>>>>

Nice pile of wood! What's a metric cord? :confused3:

I was also trying to figure out his math. I was thinking a metric cord may have something to do with it.

It was my way of hoping that I have 10 cord out instead of 8, probably the only way to tell for somewhat sure is cut it up and stack it or put it on a truck and weigh it.

First, huh? Why would the density of the wood change how much volume of wood is in the stack? If a stack of wood is 128 cubic feet, the amount of airspace is only affected by the tightness of the stacking job and the size of the pieces. Second, I thought you were right about the split smaller can be stacked tighter thing, but it's not true. You can fit more wood in the truck (or any stack for that matter) if it's in rounds than if it's in splits. Once you split a piece of wood there's no way you can stack it tighter than it was when it grew. Bigger pieces equals less air.

thanks Motown! That was the same conclusion I have come to. It always amazed me when I split those rounds how it took up more space.

Trying to convince the wife we need a real wood burner. I致e got wood for days!

You live in Michigan - you do not need it for days, you need it for months!

BTW - I am not sure I agree with Motown on the saws. I have had my 029 for 23 years now and it cuts as good as it ever did - which is great. Wear out - not a chance. Have more fun with a larger saw - I am not sure because it would reduce the time I get to use it. I can attack fairly large trees with a little imagination and they end up losing - I wouldn't have the challenge if I had more power.

the same is true for my tractor. the little Ford goes out in the forest with me and we have a good time. Sometimes it complains a little - like this year when I cut a 30" diameter Cherry down and tried to haul the base log which was 15' long - but it got 'er done!

View attachment 547708 I used to think if I ever bought one of those small horizontal/verticle splitters I would set it on a hay wagon in the verticle position and work from the side. never bought one but built my own splitter to my desires. I'm now over 60 with a bad back but can stand at this table splitter for hours and not hurt a bit. Just last week we put through six of these facecords stacked on the skids I use in a short day working with my son who was putting the blocks on the trailer with a tractor loader.

A smart man... I can work for hours carrying but not the lifting.

Had several concrete projects and I could go all day moving the sacks from the bed of the truck to the mixer... twenty minutes of lifting from the ground and I would feel it for a week... doc said I have a glass back... in other words don't break it.

Generally people's backs get that way because for years they have been pushed to the limits and beyond.

When I was cleaning up some bushes around the shop I was not really intending to throw any of it in the woodpile, but I threw this pencil dick in there in honor of my boss.

You know, more important that a big saw is a real sharp chain. Not kinda sharp, not had a few tanks on it sharp, but really sharp. You can put the right chain on a 40cc saw and have yourself a darn nice time.

In my situation, there's never a shortage of stuff to cut. Really, never. I have cut more every year for the last 9 or so years; I'm hoping to do 30-35 cords this year. Plus, there's always limbing and thinning to do in the woods. So, for me, a big saw just means I can get more done in less time. I definitely put the most hours on saws in the same size range as the 290. My most used saw currently is a ported 261. For bucking up logs over 18-20" in diameter though, a 70-95 cc saw really makes chips fly. Put a sharp chain on a saw like that and it'll really make you smile.

You're right though, spending time with a tractor and a saw it in the woods is a good time. :)

My 50cc saw only cuts wood. It doesn't put a smile on your face with a sharp chain. Now my 372xp does. I've thought about buying a 395xp, but I really don't need one.

I know a guy who can fix it up so it makes you smile, assuming it's a pro saw. I don't think they really port clamshells very often. I have two ported 50cc saws, a 261cm and a Husky 350 with a 346ne top end. They both definitely produce a big grin. I put them in my friend's hands on Saturday. He'd never run a ported saw of any size and has mostly used a 290 farm boss. He smiled. :)

I would love to own a 372 or a 365 special at some point. I've run a couple that were very impressive.
