Actually, I lived there 25 years. so I was speaking from experience...

Mostly he NEEDS to find the biggest truck he can find, FILL it with money as he will need it.

That should AT LEAST get him going!

SR
You are right about that since it costs so much for everything. A lot of people go up there thinking that it will be easy to make it rich but don't last over a year.

Where did you live at and what were you doing, working for the government?

Don't plan to get rich...just live a life we would enjoy.
.....and don't forget, a wife with a bioengineering degree and wants to be a MidWife.

The "Farmer's Market" has become a very popular niche during the summer in Anchorage. Most of the farmers that participate are from the Matanuska Valley. The Dairy industry in Alaska failed because of high feed prices and cheap milk from Washington state.

Seems to me, that the grocery stores will buy as much as you can produce but the growing seasons are to short to sustain the money stream over the long haul. Winters are to long, cold and dark.

I would certainly do more research or come on up to see for yourself before you totally upend your life and make a move that could prove disastrous. Yep, State made lots of agricultural loans in the past but those loans came due and most could not be paid.

Wouldn't want to burst your bubble on a wonderful dream and adventure but the gamble is great.

My wife is from homer ak ,her family still lives there. Look at the Matanuska valley area for vegetable farming.Be prepared for an entirely different lifestyle. Some go and never leave like my inlaws, But a lot of people cant hack it.Good luck

We will definitely visit. Wife has been there before. Loved it. We are cold and snow lovers (pun intended).

We just want to wait till after our 4th is born in Sept.
And to give some time for that one to be less of a handful as well as our oldest be more of a help.

Plus I have a cousin and his wife moving up in the next year.
He was a lumber jack from Montana. Worked in Alaska too. He has 4 grown boys with families too. One is already planning to work up there for 7 months of the year as a mechanic for construction companies. (He is a former helicopter mechanic and was stationed in Afghanistan)

Anyway, cousin isn't planning on farming. He has money to just outright buy a hundred acres of forest and build his own cabin...which he can.

Yes, I will. Haven't had the chance yet. Will facebook message the Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Delta Junction farmer's market too. Talk to the farmer's coop in Delta Junction as well.

Just started this process. :)

Oosik, Alaska is not the same as we knew and loved. We seem to be in first place for everything bad. #1 for Domestic Abuse, #1 for Sexually Transmitted Disease, #1 for poor test scores of our children. The list is endless and gets worse each year. Crime is rampant in Anchorage and the Mat-Su and the State Legislature passed a Catch and Release Law that puts the criminals back out on the street almost immediately. Alaska was a Gem and now is fast becoming a Turd.
