Winter in Maine

   / Winter in Maine #42
There have been lots of winters like this over the decades. What I have seen in years where the winter hangs on like this is that spring gets eliminated and you go from late winter right into summer. It's 35 one day, 70 the next and no looking back. That's just my experience.

We are having a close to normal winter here. These photos I took this morning while at work. Thanks for your kind words Sixdogs

Where there is shade - there is snow. Mud season is underway- especially with the cold rain. I've put some t posts in the ground with the bucket - went in easily- no frost - but the 6X6 wood posts I shove back down wouldn't budge. Need some more melt and ground water to make the ground sloppier. I can always shove them back in 5-6" (heave during the winter).

Turning into a late spring - more like the springs of 25 years ago.

Last night's rain really ate into the snow. When I let the dog out this morning he took one look outside, said "no way!" and went back to bed. It's a little drier now, I just saw a couple of blue jays out and about so the storm must be about over.

We might have received 15" in the past 48 hours on the south shore of da lake but its ending now and our forecast does look rather warm. May be the end of trail grooming. He is a few photos taken today. Hope you like them.

This is my 38th Maine Winter, my general observations are:

1) It will always snow at least once in April.

2) The woodstove heating season runs through May.

3) Installing french drains along my driveway reduced mud season from weeks to days.

This is my 10th Maine winter and I thought I moved away from this chit weather we've had for the past 3 days:laughing:

Yeah, I always get a laugh at those who think a few warm days in late March or early April means spring is here. March is not spring in New England, neither is most of April. Usually arrives here around the 25th.

Whoever made my driveway must have done something right (other than having it slope towards the garage)...only a few days of mud, and even then not bad.

Curiously, are those XC ski or snowmobile trails? Don't usually see tracked ATVs used for grooming...here it's usually Snocats (or equivalent) pulling a much longer drag. Got my groomer's certificate a couple years ago, this was my first year actually out operating it.
