Do you all run synthetic or regular conventional gear oil in your rotary cutter gear box? Thanks

And it's more like grease not oil!

I have not had to top the oil in my old slasher. The finish mower got whatever 80-90 weight gear oil I had on the shelf, probably dino based as the synthetic stuff is bought for the car and I buy just enough for the 100,000 mile service
. My newer slasher uses 000 grease. Slasher=brush cutter.

I use what ever the owners manual calls out. And I have never seen synthetic oil specified. Least not for the equipment I own. Works for me. I see no compelling reason change.

Yeah, thought I'd change mine this weekend. It says SAE 140

I use 75w140 synthetic gear oil in all of my gear boxes, even the ones specifying 80w90.

Don't see much incentive to use synthetic oil in cutter gear boxes. I'd just put any old 75w90 oil in it.

It's basically like 30w engine oil but with different additives. The "w" numbers are bigger because it's rated at 104 F vs. 212 F for engine oils.

Just my opinion . . .

Implement gearboxes tend to get neglected, so putting a full syn oil in there will protect it better and for a longer period of time. It tends to stick a little better too, so when your implement sits idle for a long time, it will maintain a better protective film.

If you’re diligent in servicing all your equipment, I doubt you would realize the benefit. A good full syn will show lower wear metals in an analysis, so there is a definite benefit.

I keep an inventory of full syn, so it just makes sense for me to use it.
