Let痴 not overthink this. Looks like mama痴 garden won稚 require ANYWHERE near the water of some of these suggestions.

PLUS, how many people have their own tower? :)

EXACTLY! Can't discount the gee whiz factor.

I didn't realize how much the price of the small pumps went up at HF. I paid less than $100 with shipping for mine. It's the blue Pacific Hydro something one that's now rebadged as a Predator. So no 20% off coupon like I was able to use. I would step up to the larger one for the same price.

Bob, I'm kinda with the guys who suggest laying pipe from your well to the tower...

I had a bored well with a submersible pump in it, but it had a very slow recovery. I used a HF sump pump to pump the spring water into the well and then let the 3/4 HP submersible push the water up to my tanks (20,000 gallons of storage in six tanks).

My oh my. 20,000 gallons. I'm glad I don't have to submit a schedule 'F' to lurk on TBN.

We're blessed with a good well. Ran pipe down into the holler years ago by renting a JD 110 backhoe (fun times!). The direct shot to the tower would be going this way:

DirectRoute.jpg

A bit of a grade and several dozen mature trees before you bust out into the meadow where her garden is. Also have to cross this occasional creek and, frankly, I don't know how to do that other than a long, unnecessary bridge.

Sometimes it's dry and occasionally it is wide and 2 feet deep and in a hurry.

The most accessible route is right up the road from the holler to the garden.

But the trail up the hill past the creek is going the long way to the garden.

Any notion of trenching and laying a water pipe would be a long, expensive undertaking and would leave an ugly scar for a long time. The payoff is she can plant more flowers and maybe I'll get twice as many tomatoes, jalapenos, spices, and all the other stuff we mostly give away on a good year.

I'm not trying to compete with Del Monte, just clearing something off the She-Shed compound to-do list. Maybe she'll drain down the water in the tower once a week. Maybe every 3/4 days. The growing season is only 5 months and we often get good rain most the time. When we've had 'crop failure' from being too dry I was partially responsible for not bringing her enough 55 gallon barrels of water.

I'm going to try hauling water out to the shiny new water tower for awhile and see how that works out.

What I was thinking about when I mentioned the hill behind the tower, was a place to take the tractor+water so it could gravity flow into the tower tank.

Ah! No. It'd take quite a run to get higher than the top of the tower. If I could I'd be collecting rain water in a chute!

Go up to the HF 2" pump at $199.
I have one and it works great.

You were spot-on with this recommendation. With a coupon, purchased the HF Predator 2" pump for same price as 1". A $170 tribute to the global economy.

The Predator motor operates perfectly and the pump will push 150 gallons up into the tower in about 2 minutes at 1/4 throttle. Maybe 16' of head.

WaterHauler.jpg

This is my water hauler. I picked up the 150 gallon tank on the back from a defunct volunteer fire department. It rests on a King Cutter 1,000 lb carry-all that I reinforced with chains for the weight. It takes 15 minutes for the garden house to fill the tank with well water. The front ballast is another 50 gallons of water. It takes two trips to fill the water tower.

GardenPlumbing.jpg

This project is about done. Water distributed through 3/4" blue poly to corners of she-shed garden and out 5/8" garden hose with plenty of pressure to hand water plants/flowers. Yet to determine if adequate pressure for soaker hose in vegetable garden.

FYI: Household bleach contains a 5% solution of sodium hypochlorite. Adding a pint to 300 gallons of water results in 0.04% concentration of household bleach. The treated water still has a strong chlorine taste. Chemicals are an amazing thing.

Thanks for all the comments & advice folks. ~Bob

Looks good, should make the wife happy. Glad it all worked out.

Be careful using water on a sunny day. The first several gallons from those blue lines will be hot enough to kill any plants.

you may want to consider painting the exposed pvc pipes. i have pvc for a sump pump exposed, it got a bit brittle after 5-7 years

is the blue poly, pex? if so that definitely needs to be covered. pex will crack in short order in the sun
