That said I gave him a call when I got the pic asking him what river he was on, and during the conversation he told me he hurt his back. Didn't get all the details, but basically he tried to lift his 30 year old wheel horse riding mower up with a 2x6. That was the day before he went fishing, so I'm hoping it's not THAT bad.

One reason why I hope sooner or later he'll move in with us. We bought the house 13 years ago with a furnished basement with my dad in mind as I got married after my mother died. He still drives the 8 hours to visit us. I'd rather have him closer though so if there ever is a problem...

We took my Dad in at age 88. Long story; he was living with an adopted daughter who was supposedly taking care of him, so we weren't worried about him. He was in bad shape at that time, but we had him for two years; a lot of time to reconcile a lot of ancient history. He was totally dependent for the first time in his life; my wife was an angel, since she provided most of his care. I'm glad we took him in; the two of us were able to handle him quite well until about the last two weeks. Hope your experience is as rewarding.

Hope your Dad is getting the medical care he needs; my Dad wasn't.

Hope your Dad is getting the medical care he needs; my Dad wasn't.

Between the military and civilian doctors, he does go regularly, no real big worries there.

That said, talked with him tonight, apparently his golfing buddy is taking him to the doctors tomorrow as he can drive after hurting himself.

Thinking about flying up and drive him down right now depending on what the issue is. We're going on family vacation in June down to Florida, so it may give him a good excuse to house sit with my in laws in a couple of weeks.

We took in my wife's parents in their final six years and they both lived into their mid 90's. It wasn't fully a picnic but we all had a great time. Pops went everywhere with me, despite a wheelchair in later life and her mom and her baked cookies, went shopping and to lunch 24/7. They were a great couple and exemplary guests that just needed a helping hand. He used to drive steam tractors back in the old days when he was a kid. How about that!

We rescued them from a son that was supposedly taking care of them. He didn't do squat and the old guy had ants on his cookies and was noticeably malnourished when I went for a visit. He put on almost 30 lbs in a few months and back to his normal thin physique with us. The parents never complained but the MIL would occasionally give very minor but negative approval body language of the kind you would expect from a MIL. No big deal. They were worth having and I recommend it.

That's my dad, same dang coat 11 years later! My wife complains he and me are the hardest men to shop for around Christmas time LOL

Me and the family thought he wouldn't make it past a year after my mom died when he was around 72 (married for 40 years and she ran the family and was litterally the love of his life).

Sounds like a great successful marriage. I watched my dad go through the loss of mom dying after 62 years of marriage. Man it was tuff on the old guy.
