Rural living goes high tech

Last Sunday my friend was in Rome, Italy. His hog trap sent a signal telling him that there were pigs in his trap. He looked at the video and triggered the trap. Then he texted me to go get the pigs. I now have one ready for the pig roast this coming weekend

I'm sure y'all got plenty of other examples of high tech at the farm. Mine will be tasty.

A lot of farmers are getting drones to track livestock, check fences, and look for other problems. That way they will have all the tools and materials needed to fix it when they go out and thus save a trip back to the barn.

I don't have any examples of high tech on my farm -- I'm still using a flip phone.

Just wondering - is there any concerns about diseases or parasites from eating wild hog?? Gotta admit - sure looks tasty. And - Steve - my cell phone is one step above my old Motorola analog bag phone. Its a Samsung flip phone.

It still does exactly what I expect a phone to do - it makes phone calls. It doesn't brew my coffee, it doesn't flush my toilet, it doesn't turn on my lights - does a darn good job of making phone calls though.

If the meat is cooked well, then there isn't much to worry about. Don't eat it if it isn't well cooked!

My neighbors tap maple trees in several locations every spring. The sap house farthest away has a web cam so that they can check on it without making a special trip. Yet that's nothing compared to trapping pigs from another continent.

My new neighbor put up a game camera on the old barn next door to keep an eye on his property. The camera has a cellular connection and he can control it with his smartphone. Shortly after he put it up someone stole it. The interface app has a " camera stolen" function which if set the camera will report its location when it is turned on again. He's still waiting for it to report in........

The hog was very healthy when I cleaned it. No sign of any disease or parasites. Of course I will cook it well so there should be no issue. These pigs live in my friend's deer lease, feeding on his deer corn feed lot. We've all been eating lots of them.
