I don't think I would go gear. Not as handy and probably would hurt resale if that is a concern. A tractor that size is handy because it is nimble. A hydro or even shuttle makes it more so.

I agree with all the above about the HST being preferable to use. But that doesn't apply here. The OP wants said he wants the LEAST EXPENSIVE 40 hp tractor possible. His only requirements are LOW PRICE and 40 HP.

That being the case, I'd just saying I'd rather have a basic gearbox and clutch rather than an inexpensive HST. Personally I like HST, but a reliable HST seems to be more expensive to manufacture than a reliable traditional gear box, and even more so when you go up above 30/35 hp. So I think HST misses on the LOW PRICE requirement....
