Raccoon War

The FIRST thing EVERYONE should learn about a "Raccoon War" is,

YOU DO NOT TAKE PRISIONEERS!!!

The only reason to use a live trap is because you cant find them during your waking hours. Always dispatch them while in the trap then they can become food for some other animal if nothing other than buzzards. The only thing I bury are domestic animals that die of illness or injury.

Knock on wood. Knock Knock Knock.

But we don't have problems with raccoons. When we bought the place I figured we would have lots of raccoon and thus problems but I have only seen ONE raccoon in all of the years we have had the place. The one time I saw the masked bandit, I was making beer and I put the five gallon bucket of wort on the porch to cool down. Wort is basically hot sugar water. I went out to check the wort's temperature and I saw a raccoon making a bee line for that bucket! The masked bandit was following the scent of the wort being blown away from the house. And it was not really windy! Ricky Raccoon eventually saw me and he ran off which was the last time I every saw one.

A possum did something similar but I had to yell at it before it noticed I was on the porch. It was about the crawly up on the porch to get to the wort when I started to make noise.

We do NOT keep garbage outside. It is just too easy to put the bags in the back of the truck and take it to the collection center. When we built the house, we bought three huge garbage cans but we never use them for house hold garbage. I will put barn/shop type of trash in the cans but that is not food and does not cause any problems.

I used to clean pools in a huge retirement community in FLA. D...d raccoons would poop in the pool, on the step, and make a heck of a mess. One of my jobs was checking the pools early each morning and cleaning up after the raccoons. My boss would live tramp the critters and dispose of them. They were in the development because of the dumpsters full of trash and some ijots would feed the pesky things. Some of them were HUGE.

Later,
Dan

I used to have wild animal problems when the only dog I had was a Border Collie. After she passed I got two more dogs, a German Shepherd and a 70 lb. rescue mutt. The shepherd is the prolific hunter. He's killed multiple ground hogs, moles, mice, opossum, and a skunk. The skunk smell didn't wear off for over a week, poor dog, but I think he got used to it lol. They keep the coyotes away along with the coons. I do see an occasional rabbit and squirrel but he chases them off when he sees them but he's just not fast enough to catch a rabbit or squirrel. The feral cats don't show up anymore either.

I hate it when people relocate their problem animals to some back road. I live on some back road, and I have enough problem animals of my own without dealing with somebody else's. Just my :twocents:

The Raccoon was not relocated to Maine.

We once had one get in the sub station a work and took out our power. He wasn稚 as tough as yours. Actually, he was just a piece of charcoal when it was all over.

Funny you would mention a sub station because our repairman said he saw a Raccoon walk away after disabling a sub station with 68,000 volts

reekees - I don't want to be a PITA but I bet you are going to wish it was 40 miles, not 4.

You may be right? I really don't know what the recommended distance is. Thought about spray painting him for ID but he was already traumatized and focused on removing my fingers.

have the balls to kill them!

Been there done that. Wasn't a pleasant experience. Thought it would be more humane to use the relocate alternative this time.

Our 100 lb. Lab died a year ago. He kept the wild animal situation under control. But since then the critters have learned he's gone and they are doing a happy dance. Have seriously thought about getting a German Shepherd but neighbor has chickens.
