It's too easy to forget today. I could be mistaken as I came of age just as we pulled out of Vietnam; yet I don't believe there is as much emphasis put on civic duty. And it's not just the "old farts"! Lest we forget.
Saw a comment somewhat critical of those "old farts @ McDonald's" in the morning, talking about nothing. I reflected upon those old fellows that wrote the Declaration of Independence. Maybe the McD fellows have paid some dues, raised a family, served their country, lost a child to World Conflict, lived their lives by a code, maybe they aren't really just talking about "nothing"

Growing up in the family greenhouse, the weeks building up to Memorial Weekend were always busy. A couple of my uncles had served in WWII and Korea and were among family members who helped out after getting off from their regular jobs; a lot of stories were told during the slow spells but we never heard about their wartime days. Yet like my uncles, some of those "old farts" are the reason that we are able to express our opinions here today without fear of government retaliation.
Always a sad day for me. I think about my dad. I think about a young man with his whole life before him....college, law school....but who lied about his age and went to war instead. He did come back, and he went to collage and to law school. But he had paid a price. The same nightmares every night for the rest of his life. The strange jungle infections no doctor could ever seem to diagnose or treat. He never talked about any of it, ever. But we as a family always knew the price he had paid, and we paid it too. I am the proud daughter of a Marine Corp veteran, and I am grateful to all those who have paid the price for our liberty.
